Media players on the fritz

As already apparent, I'm not that tech savvy, but has anybody experienced this problem before?

Media players refuse to play on my browser for some reason. Worked fine this morning, doesn't now. Youtube vids load and play for 2 seconds then stop as if they are buffering, and so doesn't every other online video media format I've encountered so far.

I use the latest firefox 3 and did a reboot, which worked, but then the problem came back.

I've had this problem before and it usually just goes away suddenly without me realizing what I did to fix it. Anybody else had this problem or at least know how to fix it?
