Connection Speed

Now, before you start, this isnt a thread to swing around your E-peen and say that you have a better connection than anyone else. Nor will I want this thread to be about who has the faster connection.

I have windows vista, and recently had a service where I had .7 MB/sec as a DL limit. I never achieved that limit, usually it was 79 KB/sec. So about 7 months ago I upgraded to uverse and got a 1.5 MB/sec connection. It has never even been close. I have done speed checks and they all put me at 1.5-1.35 MB/sec, yet no matter where I DL from, I always get 179 KB/sec.

I am using a 50 ft. CAT 5 line to link me and my router, I am also running vista. Essentially, I know I can get 1.5 MB/sec since the speet tests show that, but why cant I get a DL rate to match that?

You did NOT get a 1.5MB/sec connection. You got a 1.5Mb/sec connection. Huge difference. B is byte and b is bit. 8 bits in one byte.

So, they say you have a 1.5Mb connection. That is 1536kb/sec. (1.5 x 1024)
Now we divide that by 8 - like I said, 8 bits in one byte.
so 1536kb/s = 192kB/s.
This is the theoretical maximum, so they won't give you more than this. Though you rarely, if ever, reach this maximum. It's always going to be a little slower.

Now you say you get 179kB/s. Sounds pretty normal to me.

Re: Connection Speed

If you want help to get the fastest connection possible, you need to spend some time on this site:

DSL · Cable · VOIP · Security · Satellite · Fiber · News · Tips · Reviews · Community · Tools - dslreports.com

At the top they have link to Tools and Forums. Use all the tools possible 1st to help you clean up and set your connection right, and if that doesn't help, use their forums. Just make sure you post in the right forum.

The egg heads on their are way too into networking and will be able to help. But use the tools first, so you don't waste their time and they won't have to tell you to go use the tools then come back.

Re: Connection Speed

Also, if you're on a ADSL line running over copper wires (although given that you're a yank you probably aren't), your speeds will drop the further away from the telephone exchange you are.

@Eddie: You sure you're not confusing Bytes (B) and bits (b)?

Looks like it to me:
1500kB/s = 187.5kb/s

Turn 360 degrees and walk away is what you should do tbh.
