Help - moving to area where only DSL is available

I'm moving to an area where there is only verizon DSL available. No, it is not subsaharan africa - it's actually a big city in the northeast - but for some reason there is no cable or fiberoptic internet. Can anyone tell me if I'll be able to play PR with 768k down/128k up, or should I shell out the extra for 3Mbps down/768k up?

I've never had DSL before and am not looking forward to the change but I hope at least it will be better than nothing...

Edit: I should add that I currently have Time Warner Cable 5Mbps down/ 384k up and I get great ping even on servers in Germany

Currently i have 6Mbit down and 768 up, but i am going to switch to 20Mbit down and 1024Kbit up, i hope my ping will go down even more, 6Mbit is fair.

With kind regards,

for online gaming its often much more important to have good ping time that the actual need for huge amounts of info to be transmitted. For many online games the amount of info transmitted is quite small, but continuous and urgent, so if you have a slow or unreleable connection you will suffer more than a "slow" sized connection.

the only pain will be downloading the pr patches which will take you mcuh much longer, but otherwise i think you should be o.k on the smaller package as long as its got a good ping. but that you probably wont be able to tell untill you have it.

i used to have a 1mb connection and i never had any problems playing online games because the ping was great (i had a bt exchange 20 meters from my house)

What Burlock said it correct.
You will not get a better ping with a faster connection. Ping is how fast it can work data through the system to the server, and it is not really that much data. I had a 4mb account through Comcast that got upped to 6mb, and then I decided to go up to the 15mb teir. Guess what. Pings were still the same. And I never got downloads any faster than the 6mb because other servers can only send data so fast. I was considering dropping back down to the 6mb because it just wasn't worth the extra $15 or so for the 1-2 times a month I might have pulled out a 7mb download.

With DSL, which I thankfully have never had, my understanding is it will have a lot to do with how far from the substation type thing you are. The further you are, the slower you will be.

Spend some time on this site

It should be able to help you maximize your connection, epically with help from their forums and the tools they offer.

Is there any way to find out how far I'll be from the nearest verizon DSL substation? The city is Worcester, MA

Where the hell are you now? The east coast isn't THAT bad, sheesh >.>

I've got the 3Mb down package; I get ~120 ping to most of Europe, 30 ping on TG, and 20 ping on TCC.

hell i play with 1mb down w/ dsl and im in alaska....i can only play texasteamgamers, battlearena, and tacticalgamer w/o lag. so u cant do much worst than that anywhere in the lower 48 w/ the slowest dsl connnection ever. if i was u i would go with the cheapest...cuz im cheap, and also because any file u want to download the slowest download rate would get it done over nite...most likly.

I used to be on 512k down and 128k up and had no problems whatsoever. I'm now on 1mb down connection and that too is fine although my ping has gone up slightly due to it being a dsl max connection.
Ping has nothing to do with your down and upload speeds, unless you are on dial up (correct me if I'm wrong here), it's more to do with your proximity to your chosen server.
So to sum it up, the slower connection should be fine, just a bit slow for pron video's
