Fighting the infantry is easy, but trying to kill the damnd arty is painful.
Even with a hight advantage and shooting through the woods i lost half my men (those troops in blue jackets), even tough they took the brunt of the American infantry attack and only lost a dozen men. Once Arty starts shooting canister shots your soldier are good as gone. |

To win the battle easily, just follow what the British general did, but with modifications.
Send most of your troops to the left, easily wiping out the american light INF stationed there. Make sure you keep your Arty, INF and CAV togeather, leave around 1 CAV unit, 2 Hessian Line and the Light INF unit behind the hill. Your units will be untouchable...as at Waterloo trajectory is the INF's saving grace. The American's shouldn't counter attack accross the Creek, but rahter move a lot of units away to meet your threat, you can either 1. Act quickly and wipe out a much of the smaller force near the enterable building as you can, or play it long and set up a threatening position on their side of the river. Position yor Arty so you have a shot on their troops but again, use that hill to your advantage to shield your troops from the enemy arty. Usually, the AI will be worried about your troops that you left behind and will keep them rooted to the spot. Your INF units should be in a line formation, it is DEF worth it to keep a unit in reserve, slightly back but not too much. I chose the grenadiers, no point getting the big men involved in a firefight. Cavalry should be kept out of the woods and are great for an attacking counter when you think your line might bulge or as a late foray into enemy. Now the next bit gets convoluted, due to the many possibilities. If you want to attack their main force, pound them with arty fire, notice where their cones of fire might be and send in the CAV units you have kept with the main force to try and disrupt their nice little lines. Whilst all of this is going on. Form your INF into attacking columns. Not too few men wide though (or it beomce marching formation) but with enough depth to pack a real punch as momentum into the same areas of their line will buckle it. It may even be worth trying to catch the unit you are assaulting on their reload. Sacrificing a few CAV members as you go. When charging, use RUN. No point walknig to the enemy when all you want to do it hand to hand. Discretionary stop and fire is available too, but remember, you are in a column and the men at the back are not gonig to hit anything. So charge away and if you make good use of flanks you should be able to overcome them easily. THe melee will quickly become messy (also advisible to stop firing arty into your own men too), but if you can route a unit, do so, and look out for units that are getting isolated. More likely to route and cause wider panic. If you want to attack the flank, wait until the enemy draws so many troops away from the creek (most likely, 1 or 2 will be on patrol between your forces and the main crossing) before attacking, a diversion from your CAV may also be helpful. But storm across, picking off the arty at longer range with the light INF where Canister shot is not effective, or if you see an opening in the line (mostly at either side), wait until the arty has just fired, then charge it with the CAV unit. Once you route their arty, you can take your merry time mopping up the rest. The AI may try to send their main force back to retake the crossing, in which case you sweep around with your main force, all the river attack force needs to do is hold on long enough for you to hit them in the back. IRL, the british general could have CRUSHED washington, but did not because he was too timid in sending troops across the creek. Thus the american army survived... Sorry for long post....i like total war games...anyone fancy getting a PR team for ETW multiplay with me? I played STW and MTW competitively... |
