take a look at the following:
(a+b)^0 = 1
(a+b)^1 = a + b
(a+b)^2 = a^2 + 2ab + b^2
(a+b)^3 = a^3 + 3a^2b + 3ab^3 + b^3
if n increases by one, then the number of terms in the expanded form also increases by one. let's say n = 42, then the number of terms would be 43.
so only if n = 2 would the number of terms be three. look in an algebra or calculus book and you'll find a very long equation. end of discussion
we assume that the question did not involve calc or anything more advanced than trinomials, for such a question would not be quized and gotten wrong.

it's simply algebra, really really hard algebra. there's a possibility "expand(a+b)^n" could be on a quiz, but all you have to do is memorize the expanded form.
But back to pics:

Pretty...pretty badass.

you are correct. For the rest of you its called the quadration rule or something like that. I probably got it all wrong since i translated it from Swedish. But the important thing is that it only applies when actually raising the same same number by 2 e.g (a-b)^2 or (a+b)^2

Edited.
This is the *silly* pictures thread, not the *border-line p0rn* thread.

Nah, not very long (if you're sensible about it):
Although it gets a bit longer if you write it out with the binomial coefficients in their factorial form, and stupidly long if you write the sum out in full. You can find more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binomial_theorem

(image stolen from wikipedia, as it's easier than trying to write it out on here. )
