can someone rate this desktop please

is this good value? I know nothing about computers.

is the processor a load of crap? (viiv???) and the ram, they had 2 selections this one was cheaper but its only 667MHz does that make a difference?

also, the graphics card, that was the only one on offer but its only 256MB.

Total around £660

PROCESSOR Intel® Viiv™ Core™ 2 Quad-Core Q6600 Processor (2.4GHz, 8MB cache, 1066MHz FSB)
OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium - English
HARDWARE SUPPORT 1 Year Base Warranty - Collect & Return
MONITOR Dell™ 22" Black Wide Flat Panel (E228WFP) - UK/Irish
MEMORY 4096MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [4x1024]
HARD DRIVE 750GB (7200rpm) SATA Hard Drive edit
GRAPHICS CARD 256MB ATI® Radeon™ HD 2600 XT graphics card
OPTICAL DRIVE DVD +/- RW Drive
SOUND SOFTWARE Sound Blaster® X-Fi Xtreme Music PCI Soundcard

PS. I hate to modify computers, I would rather just buy a new one every 3-4-ish years so will it last?

If you can, one of the best performance for price graphics cards is currently the NVidia 9600GT. Its requires a fairly good PSU though, minimum of 425W. The 9600GT performance a fraction less than the 8800GT, but is a massive £50 cheaper, at around £100 for the 512 equivalent.

Since this looks like a Dell, someone might able to answer my question, it isn't possible upgrade Dells is it not? Or is that a myth I have fallen for?

(I have 350W PSU ... hence why I haven't upgraded to it yet ... )

Dell use custom parts so upgrading is far more difficult- especially with the new cooler systems. But you can still easily fiddle with the RAM etc.

(I have a dell XPS, she's served me well for 5years now)

This isn't a gaming PC, it's a multimedia PC by the looks of it, for using advanced multimedia programs, not games.

1. Vista? Get XP
2. The graphics card - get a Nvidia 8800GT 512MB or better depending on money
3. Dell? Use the Dell website to spec a computer then find a better brand or better yet get the local techy shop to build it for you ... for cheaper AND with the ability to upgrade parts as you need to.

XP is not an option pretty much anywhere any more, besides, i might as well get vista now rather then fork out for it later on its inevitable really.

the graphics card was the only one available for that build, they have options for dual 512s but they are only on xps computers.

can you recommend any other brands? If something does go wrong i want to be able to moan at someone and get a response not some smaller company that might go broke. My friend said zepto were ok but never heard of them before.

(tech shops near me advertise 512 ram as the way to go, not the most honest places)

PS. It is intended for gaming, I cant be bothered with watching films and stuff on pc. I will also be using it with 3ds and gmax and probably auto cad soon.

hehe i went for an HP workstation because my need to use a cad. I'd say look around for a computer store in you country that builds you a custom computer. You will get performance and a good price.

Mesh are very good, however, they are more expensive than Dell (but who isn't?).
However, you can save money, for example, if you already have a monitor, that saves £100 when you customise the PC.
MESH Computers

If its for gaming, I really suggest the minimum graphics card you go for is the 9600GT or the ATI equivalent. (Someone more in the knew should be able to say which that is)
