thats all just wild speculation. no computer has ever displayed anything other than what humans have programed into it.

Someone please tell me that the above is irony.

Wild? No. Quantum computing is in its infancy, and it's unlike any silicon based computer as far as potential. The world is round, the Earth revolves around the Sun, Man can fly, you can travel faster than sound, ect all "wild speculation" in the past. AI could start as the intelligence of a roach, people think AI = Human mind, it won't start at that level.

I have to agree, at least we won't see anything like that in any of our life time.

Yes, and in my opinion it is impossible. Computers can show "intelligence" but only using what has been previously entered by humans. Computers use off/on and follow a set of instructions. They need those instruction programmed into them to work..

For AI to be a reality, computers need to drastically change the way they work.

And that would be quantum computing, it's not 1s and 0s its both, at the same time. No longer will it be a on or off switch. Calling quantum computing a drastic change is a huge understatement and you will see it in your life time, it already exists.

As an aside, I'd like to point out we've been using principals of quantum computing for years. Your current HDD's use some principals. New memory types called "Race track" memory use it as well.

And it uses the superposition of electron's spin, IIRC.

AI has only not come to levels of human intelligence because we need a computer capable of human level computations... it will come eventually.

Most of these topics have been discussed a million times over in Science Fiction writing ever since Aurthor C. Clack brought it up in 2001:A Space Odyssey.

If you dont know the story, read it(or watch it... the movie keeps the books points) and think about how the computer (HAL) is behaving... Hal was made with purpose and Hal tried everything in his power to complete his purpose

One other thing... people are very nieve about AI. www a-i com has created a project that has a computer talking at a 5 year old level with only programming in the alphabet.

Not really. I never saw a point in having every day AI -- if you need it, you're doing life wrong.

The whole idea of replacing ourselves with AI units has always perplexed me. What is the point of creating a society around you just to remove yourself from it?
