The UK has a free National Health Service which, to be fair is pretty good. But funding is spent over zealously by all accounts and cracks are appearring in it now. Personally i think we should bin the NHS and cut our losses, save the economy £40B a year and privatise the lot.
Lets be honest, care would be better and the country would be 10% richer every year.(Until the f**king money grabbing government give themselves a payrise and a private jet each, then tax the nurses for being nurses, then tax the doctors for knowing the nurses etc etc) |

Health care and in a broader sense Social security in France dates back in its modern form from the WW2 resistance movement and put into place right after the IVth Republic constitution.
- It is financed by a mix of Employers and workers Contributions. - Managed by the whole of social partners (Employers and the Unions) The system being in nature based on solidarity and Universal, there is an obligation to subscribe to the system and in return everyone has access to it. The World Health Organization in its 2000 report rated France as providing the best overall health care followed by Italy, Spain, Oman, Austria and Japan. In short for most things, the public system covers 60% of the costs and the private one covers the rest (depending on what type of private coverage taken) But its not entirely free as now there is usually a base cost you need to pay in order to keep people responsible. The systems does have its quirks and financing problems obviously but in the whole it works pretty well all the more when compared to the rest of the world. I know a couple of Americans here in Paris, which have come to live here in large part because of the health system as they for different reasons where deemed "high risk" and where pretty much uninsurable in the US. And I'm not talking about bums here, but of middle/upper class people. On a personal level, a good number of my family work in the private medical sector while a couple of my friends are in the public one. So I hear a bit of the behind the curtain stories of how things work, and when sad stories happen its more about a need for greater optimization then a system breaking down. As you said you watched 'Sicko', I live in fact 500m from the Saint-Antoine Hospital shown when he does his piece on France. I've been there twice for emergencies. - Once when my girlfriend had a deep cut in her hand from a glass shattering (while cleaning it - 2nd time when at work a pain in my elbow evolved into a red swelling with a local high temperature ending up with a blocked arm. Not that great when you have to transport stuff around a store all day. Of course that happened the day after the "Nuit Blanche" and had to wait an hour before the head surgeon told me it was a simple hygroma which got worse because of the cream my pharmacist gave me Oh and for the cost to each individual. At one of my previous jobs on a base salary of 1300€ : - I'd have 280€ in social contributions (80€ specifically for health care) - 370€ for my employer (170€ for health care) My private health insurance costing around 25€ (the minimum) All in all making my net salary 1010€. From my point of view and considering that I rarely am sick (if ever) I could consider that all that money I'm paying is not coming back my way. But that would be short sightedness as it pays for my goddaughter who can play like normal 6yr old even tho she has a bad type of asthma, it helps cover my best friend who was born premature and can concentrate on her studies rather then finding a job to cover her costs. It even covers womens right to choose (as in the pill), and that I can hardly complain about So in the end I'm not getting much from the government for what I pay, but I get a lot more from the people who are able to live normal lives thanks to it. |

I just stopped reading.
America's healthcare system is pretty shitty right now, especially for the low or no-income. But TBH its not as bad as Mikey Moore wants it to be. Moreover, adding such huge amounts of cash to the US budget when we are already in debt isnt helping. Needs to be a middle ground. |

No things aren't as bleak as M.Moore shows them, but they sure have gotten worse since I've left the US. | |
