In the past when I have been totally broke I have done some of the things the guy above mentioned, the DVD backups and the online back ups.
Tons of places offer a free 5 gigs, and some offer even more for a few dollars a month. As for the DVD, I did that for a while. It took time to do, but 4 gigs on each DVD and you can get a 25 pack of good DVDs (not crappy ones or you will run even more risks) can be had for $7 on sale. I have been happy with the sony brand, but there are guides out there for which ones are best. And a good DVD burner can be had for $30. Really though, you can find used cheap hard drives on like craigslist or in old junk computers. I have a ton of like 20 gig drives around me now that I have pulled from the dumpster at my apt. Funny thing is lots of them had personal info from their former owners on them, so I wiped them 1st thing. I have more than enough HD space on my backup drive now, but if I had something really important I would just plug one of the 20gig or so ones in, copy over, then put that drive in a safe place. |

Eh there are a couple programs out there that might be able to help you. The guy who does the CAD comic mentioned using it once.

Software will not work, the BIOS does not read the drive, therefore any software is not an option for me.

well theres one other thing you could do... if you know anyone that has a spare HDD of your type you can simply switch the disks inside and it should work. my friend did something similar. But i dont guarantee anything. you might end up breaking both of them for all i know.

Hrm not a good idea, quite extreme and like you said may end up messing up both drives no matter how careful you are. This very rarely works, ive tried it a few times and its ended up in disaster more often than not. Then again it may or may not hold up until youve recovered your data thats the gamble. If you have the money yes take it to an expert in these matters, but be under no illusion itll cost you a pretty penny to get it sorted out. | |
