if it's really important stuff you have on your HDD don't mess with it but leave it to the pro's. they will be able to recover most of it at agreeable cost usually.

I could get you a link better explaining it, because its been a while and I cannot explain to you in detail what to do, but it is actually very simple.
different thing. In your case, OS got screwed up. In his case, hdd got screwed up. Huge difference.

I wouldn't go as far as opening it, but I do recommend you throw it to the freezer for a while, about 30 mins should be enough, and then try booting. Weird method, I know, but try it anyway.

If that fails then take it to the pro's, they will be able to recover the data. It will cost a bit but since there is a lot of work on the hdd it's going to be worth it.

I don't pity you at all, as a graphic designer I have all my shit backed up every two days onto a portable HDD.

In fact it's one of the first things they taught us at university, after we had been there for two months, they deleted everything from our personal folders. If we lost shit, too bad, should have been backed up.

If you are working on a game or major modification like First Strike, then all I can do is laugh at you for not backing up tbqh.

well that is quite harsh but I agree it is really the only way to learn that you need to back stuff up.

Well you can go to hell, I don't have extra money laying around to buy extra backup HDDs for everything. It wasn't some shitty 40 GB HDD form Dell...

I tried freezing it then booting, and botting it in all different orientations...

When starting it goes like this: zzzzZZz--Tick-Ahhh

Sort of like it's powering up then cooling off with a tick...

Anyone know of a place I can send it to get recovered for less than 10000000 dollars?

It's impossible to be not able to recover your data, unless it somehow went boom. Because:

--------------------------- Layer you can save things
--------------------------- Layer you can save things
--------------------------- Layer where all your deleted stuff is saved
--------------------------- Layer where all your deleted stuff is saved
--------------------------- Layer you can save things

Go to teh pol1ce and azk themz0!

Google for some companies that do it. There are lots that your can ship the drive to. They can even recover from drives that have been in a fire or in water.
