You're all a bunch of numpties. ('cept e-Gor, he made sensible comments)
The question was, and I quote Quote:
Is StarCraft realistic? No. Is it hella fun? **** YEAH! As such, I'm firmly in the "I don't care how realistic it is, as long as it's fun" section. Would I play PR if it wasn't fun, if it was only realistic? No. I wouldn't. I play games because they're just that. I play PR because I find working with my team in a realistic environment fun. If I stopped finding it fun I would stop playing. Realism for the sake of Realism is pointless. We have realism to enhance the fun. Co-ordinating a squad of realistically armed and equipped troops in a realistic environment to clear out an entrenched USMC position, or hunt down and destroy weapons caches is fun. But so is racing a Blue Hedgehog against a Fat Italian in Beijing and crushing the GDI scum with invisible tanks in the name of Kane. Peace Through Power!

The key to modernising any weapon is covering them in glue and tossing them in a barrel of M1913 rails until they look "Modern" enough.

EDIT: And one more thing, this isnt so much about how a player decides what game to play but more about why the gaming industry, doesnt make fun and realistic game(like PR). Using your logic everyone would play that game yet a disproportionate amount of people continue to maybe try a realistic game(like this one) and come to the conclusion that they dont like them. Which is why the industry doesn't make more games like this.

Something is only fun in the eyes of a player, no one can be told something is fun and instantly find it be so, simply because it "should" be fun. It doesn't work like that. You can say your game is fun till you're blue in the face, it doesn't make it so. It might well be fun for you, but that doesn't mean it'll be fun for me. As one gets more extreme the niece of people who will enjoy the game gets smaller. Games like PR, ArmA or Microsoft Flight Simulator will never be as popular as things like CoD or Halo as they're no where near as easy to pick up and play. And the games industry is just that, and industry. The bottom line is they're here to make money. And making the most money means appealing to the widest market. Basically Realism != Fun. Not everyone wants to be a United States Marine fighting realistic battles against Insurgents. Just like not everyone wants to run around with a big sword and hit orcs with it.

My friend inadvertently pointed out what I feel about game realism. He said, "I don't want realism in a game because I don't want to walk 10 minutes to get to where I am going."
The real point he was making is fun in a game is (but not limited to) being able to do something that you can't in real life or don't want to take the time to do in real life (guitar hero anyone?). Do people play the sims to experience their own life twice? How many people would like to have the experience of fight orcs for minas tirith? Realism is fine and dandy and more thrilling for some who can't or just don't relate to fantasy worlds but it still has to offer something that you can't or don't want to give the effort to achieve in real life. Do I enjoying the intense thriller of fighting for my life with my mates standing next to me in a jungle across the world? Yes. Do I want to do that in real life? No. |

And is your Opinion of the R-MOD team honestly so low that you think we would stoop to using our powers to "win" arguments?

No, Marley, your intimidating. I fear you. Iron, now you must face your fears and explain yourself because he told you so, or he will rape your children with a hammer made of ban.
/ontopic. People are usually not open to realistic games because they instantly associate the word realistic to things that they do in real life, and dont think that its "fun". It can be that people are one track minded, or would rather just enjoy being a plumer driving around in a golf cart with mushrooms and orcs. I find those games lame, but thats my opinion... Im starting to sound like everyone else here, but most of us here will enjoy a similar gaming experience because we view realism as fun. Even PR has unrealistic aspects, and its fun as hell, so admitably we would fall under middle category. Even with the figures we see in this poll we still see developers sticking with idea that realism is fun, and caters to the type of gamers we are. We wont stop having sims or the more realism focused games just because there is a market for other types of games. Game developers are gamers too, and some will enjoy playing and making the sorts of games they like. I wish to work for a company that understands the smaller market and gives them what they want. There is still 88.5% of gamers according to that poll that would likely still buy and play a realistic game if it could satisfy them. Its not like money wont be had if developers focus on realism, its just up to them to produce a fun experience. |

Well I wouldn't play a realistic game if it was no fun so I fully understand the poll results. To be honest I think the poll was done badly because it did not deliver any real information except that most people play games they enjoy and not care if they are realistic or not.
PR is about bringing realism into a game that lacks it but it is also about keeping the game fun and making it even more fun in some areas then the original. I have been playing 2 rounds of vanilla since becoming part of the PR team. I would never want to go back there. They don't even have AAS not to mention Insurgency. Buildings or Rally points? Scopes for non-snipers? Multi-crew Armor? The list would get long but I guess people see the point. PR is not just more realistic than vBF2. It offers more that it, too. And for me that more includes the word fun. |
