XBMC - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
From what I've seen the XBMC has been ported to Win XP and some other O/S as well, but I have no experience for that.
I use my Xbox almost only as a media station in my livingroom, connected to the LAN, so I can listen to music or watch movies from my PC. A friend of mine uses it with a small NAS box where he stores his music/movies. Works perfectly. You could use your old computer parts for a small server, and in your livingroom you'd only have your telly and the xbox.
Oh, and I almost forgot - you can play games on the xbox as well!
The regular old xbox(witha few modifications) is one of the better media devices around.

Theres probably an excellent Linux OS out there that would fit your needs. It would be free too so that makes sense if you're putting together old computer parts.

I run Ubuntu Linux on my media PC. It streams movies and music off of my primary computer. Since Ubuntu is free and does all the media stuff you can want quite well, it should work perfect.

What is better though, would be to install the free XBMC (XBox Media Center) on an original XBox. The interface is amazing and you can still play your games as well as emulators. I want to set one of these up for myself but I have to round up an old XBox first.

Installing Windows Media whatever is more expensive than you really need, and it required better hardware than a linux variant.

from the looks of things its not a O/S since its running though vista, with vista being the O/S

I need a O/S that 100% dose media and not much else too keep things running smoothly and fast with it, want a start up time of a TV etc
However, there IS such a thing as Windows Media Centre Edition
