UV Mapping?
Ok, I'm really wanting to help out with community mods, but I'm not sure what is needed when it comes to UV Maps. I bet after awhile during next school year I could help with skinning(taking a digital imaging class which translates to photoshop) and after playing around with that for a while I should be able to help with that but seeing that UV Mapping is whats needed, I just have to ask the question, what step? I have a UV Mapper program(appropriately named UV Mapper) but all it's for is moving the textures around and setting up the texture, and Im not sure if thats whats needed or if its the unfolding per-say of the texture
Any clarification would be appreciated. |

You should get a basic understanding of 3dsMax, then try to learn to uv map. You would need to understand how the model was put together, and from there, we may be able to help you. I dont want to be making any pictograms for you just yet, but learn the tools, and make a simple model or two. There are a few tuts sitting around on the forums here if you can find em, and there are some on various websites that proved useful to me.

Hmmm...I wish Gmax was more like a cad program, at least cadkey, easier than taking donugts and other funny shaped objects and trying to make something out of it.

hehe, I more often than not just use a flat plane and sculpt it. Im not very familiar with Gmax though, so I am not sure if the tools are the same or similar.

kinda similar, its a watered down version of it. Truth be told I don't have patience or luxury of a lonely spot to concentrate at to model really well. Maybe skinning when I learn how to use photoshop more from my class.
Anyone need a background story teller? GYSGT's Game and Story Base - Semper Fi I've made a whole bunch of stories that I haven't put up since I never really finished them (never had a need to) but I think for the first two I did in 8th grade, they're pretty good Oh yeah copytright 2008 |

Gmax is more or less the same, but without the rendering and exporting/importing capabilities of 3ds max. I suggest you do as Dylan said, and just start of with a plane, which you can then model into any shape you like.
A good tip is also to do the Beretta tutorial, which I've posted up earlier on the Community Modding forums. Do a search for it (because I can't be arsed to find the link for you right now |
