Is commercial tactical gaming a dead genre?
Even after all these years of gaming I have yet to find a better "special forces" game than Ghost Recon, a better CQB game than SWAT4 and the only somewhat tactical combined arms game is this modification.
I just got Rainbow Six: Los Vegas. I'm expecting something similar to the old RB6, the original and Rogue Spear. I was not correct. The game is just like COD4, unlimited spawning enemies, single angle of attack, self-healing, a plethora of different guns. Is there another game I should give a try? Is GRAW anything like it's predecessor (not the console GR2, the original) or is it just like RB6:LV, perverted by the console crowd? I recall that the demo did not impress (3 guys? WTF?) I have tried the ArmA demo. I love the concept but the engine felt "clunky" and the other common complaints. Maybe I will try it one day though. I have hopes that ArmA2 or OFP2 will deliver. There is a strong market for truely tactical games as the popularity of this mod attests to (more popular than BF2 mods that cater to the same gameplay commercial games do). Perhaps mods will be the only ones to deliver. Next-gen engines like Crysis and Far Cry 2 would be beyond perfect if only their multiplayer capabilities could get in line. Any tactical games I might have missed along the way or upcoming in a matter of time? |

ArmA2 is the only true tactical game coming out in the near future. As far as Armour goes, Steel Beasts is the best out there, and as far as Air goes, LO-MAC, or IL2, are probably the best out there.
However, BlackFoot Studios are working on a new game, announced about a year ago. They're the original devs of Ghost Recon, so it should be fun. BlackFoot Studios Forum (Powered by Invision Power Board) Holy Moly! Fast Roping!![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

The thing is that modern players need that hyper-active adhd bunnyhopping experience with lots of big explosions. Making a realistic tactical shooter wouldn't probably be worth it. It would take a lot of resources and the market isn't that big. Companies have to make profit so it's a lot better for them to just make a pretty simple game with a lot of fast paced action since that type of thing sells. | |

The market is there, it's just that the people who would make it can't find a sponsor/publisher to fund it. Like that black foot game, they had to do it themselves.
Everyone loved the hardcoreness of the past games like GR and R6, it was when the consoles took hold all the dev got put on that because the people who run these companies like EA and shit are not really gamers, they are just business people who only care about making a profit. The whole realism/Sim comminity has been forgotten and the community has to keep it going from within by modding old ass games. Look at Falcon 4 (btw which is 10x more realistic than lomac) the game is ten years old and it's only still alive because it's kept alive by the people who play it. There is nothing better than that 10 year old game, which is sad. You could make a hardcore tactical shooter and charge 100 bux for it and if it was really the shit, people would buy it. The hardcore sim/tac crowd spends more on things like controllers and track ir and mice, keyboards ect than on the games they use them with, I don't see why the game itself can't be worth that much. |
