Dorm Robberies
Some asshole decided to come into my dormitory building and steal laptops from unlocked rooms. Apparently he robbed at least two rooms on my floor, and multiple other rooms on other floors (10-story building).
It appears I talked to the guy and didn't even know it. At the door was some random guy who I've never seen before who was like "Uh, is there a Colin .... on this floor?" or something to that extent. I told him not that I know of, and he asked if he might live in the other tower (we have two 10-story buildings next to each other). I told him maybe, and asked him if he was sure he had the right floor. His answer to that was really sketchy, and he said something like "I dunno, this is the floor I got off on." Then he left and went further down the hall, away from the elevators. An hour later I first heard about someone further down the hall getting her laptop stolen and managed to put two and two together. A cop showed up to take a report from her so I gave him my description of the guy and my details, and he said detectives will probably call me sometime. They think they know who did it, and he asked if I could identify him from a picture or line-up, which I told him maybe. Since I was on the phone I could give him a time accurate to +- 5 mins. Hopefully they catch the bastard. I'm glad I was in my room, we leave it unlocked a lot. Had he robbed our room...well lets just say there is a nice digital SLR, two laptops, two widescreen monitors, another monitor, two desktop PCs, and a printer. He would have been in candy land. Moral of the story, lock your doors, and pay close attention to creeps who seem sketchy. |

Yeah I was an RA at Georgia Tech in a similar two wing building and the same thing happened twice during my 3 years in that position.
They just knock on all the doors and then try to open the one's where they don't get an answer. So LOCK YOUR DOORS college dudes! |

When I was 5 our house got robbed as well. They smashed the door because we did lock it. They stole everything, from passports till TVs. And yes, they even stole my little toy cars!

I can't go into details or the police might get upset, but theres a Uni near here where a family member works as 2nd in command of security and there'd been a run of burglaries in the uni properties.
The police had said they wanted to deal with it. But one night they "ran out of overtime", left the area and burglaries went off. Another night the police missed a hinted at 20 minute window of opportunity. So the security team, totally pissed off since they are responsible for their students safety, having observed the patterns, put in some overtime of their own and set an ambush. The thieves came in, just as they thought they would, the team moved in and took them down. Then they called the police to pick up the thieves. Both the Uni's in my city allow access to the public. Part of local bylaws. There's even restricted access to the libraries. There have been bag snatches and laptop thefts going on randomly and it is highly annoying, but even with them the public are still let in. I've personally seen thieves (the city is a small place) walking through my campus looking dodgy and there's nothing I can do really. |

Hope they nab the guy. I'd be super pissed if someone stole my computer, I would have to break them.

i've got a nice 2k+ dollar desktop, and even though it's a desktop, i still lock my room everytime i leave. people leave their rooms unlocked all the time, but our dorm has a keycard entry on the outside door, and then a key-lock entry to your floor, and then your room, so they call it 3steps of security.

In high school, I lived on Ball State Universities campus, and I had my laptop stolen from my room. Finally, they found the kid with a crate full of stolen computers and graphing calculators.
He got kicked out of school and later committed suicide :/ A friend of mine just this year had his laptop stolen at college. He bought a new one. His parents just told him to be thankful he has the power to simple buy a new one :/ We also had several reports this last weekend of someone going through the dorm rooms stealing a bunch of iPods, laptops, music, stereo stuff, etc. A lot of it was from a friend :/ To sum it up: People suck. |
