![]() I just got Maya (waiting for the Maya: Fundamentals DVD) I'm playing around with it just now trying to get used to the controls. Basically loosely followed a tutorial and its nothing complicated but I thought id share it with you anyway. |

If that's what you make when you just get Maya, I'm really looking forward to some stuff you make later on! Neat little screwdriver you got there!

Just realised I miss-spelt 5 words, lol.
Thanks for the compliment. I actually used 3DsMax for a little while so modeling isn't completely new to me, but the whole layout of Maya is different and there's like a few hundred different things that I never saw in 3DsMax. There's only one thing I need now, a decent computer. I dread to think how long some of those renders are going to take on this old thing. |

Just a question.. I really don't have any experience with 3d modeling... had a CAD class in highschool.. but was kinda ghetto ... Anyhow, my question.. How long did it take to make that? Perhaps.. how long would it take you if you took your time.. ate a sandwhich.. had a beer... you know.. to compare a time to someone that didn't have as much experience with the basics of modeling.

@Harven
It took me around half an hour but if I did it again I could probably do it in around ten minutes. I would say that if yo were to open up Maya for the first time after little play around with it it probable would take someone 30-50 minutes to make one. If you were reasonable good at CAD then the basics of Maya (and other modeling programs) will be fairly easy to pick up. @Rhino I couldn't give you a definite answer. After using Maya for a day or two now it does seam easier to use even though it looked complicated at first. Maya definitely has a lot more options than 3DsMax. I would probably say if you want to stick with only modeling then 3DsMax is probably the best, If you want to do modeling, animation and just about anything else then Maya is the way to go. That's mainly because of the price, Maya unlimited is almost twice the price of 3Ds max but definitely worth it. To go into it more, I found Maya's rendering options were a lot easier to use. Also Maya can create NURBS and Subdiv's (other ways to model) which I never saw in 3DsMax @Ender772 Yes, although I don't know what you can export to. There's also a number of small programs that will import/export for game models as well |
