Need suggestions for a new vid card
With the issues of overheating I have had with my 7900GT and Christmas/my birthday rolling around, I figure I'll just get a new video card as a gift.
My price range is pretty much up to $300. Here is my setup as it is now: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ 2 gigs of RAM NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT SB Audigy 4 Pretty sure my video card is EVGA. Also, should I upgrade my sound card? Thanks in advance for any responses. |

I would go for am 8800gt which is by far the best bang for buck of the moment and if you can stretch to it the XiFi extreme music is very cheap now since being replaced with the extreme gamer. good luck

8800gt no doubt. What resolution do you play on? If it's a low one then the 256mb 8800gt will work great, if higher res then get the 512mb gt

There are like 6 different 8800GT's on newegg... which one do I get? I'd like to the 512 MB.

Hard to tell. Only way is to read reviews I'm afraid. Not very interesting but it's the only way.

I know it is tough to do, but lots of tech sites are saying that Nvidia and ATI/AMD are going to announce all their high end new stuff in January, possible at the CES show like the first week of the month. Might wait to see what they release, and then pick one up for your birthday. ATI might have something up their sleave with the new 3870x2, which is pretty much 2 3870's on one board with 1gig of memory.
If you can't wait, like they said above, the 8800GT is a pretty amazing card for the price. You will be happier with the 512mb version in the long run. |

I can wait. I imagine that the 8000 series will drop in price as well whenever these new cards are released. I don't need anything real fancy. I plan on playing Pirates of the Burning Sea and want to play it lag free.
