Can you hear the difference between Canadians and Americans?

Six of one and half a dozen of t'other with Kelly Osbourne and an unnamed Canadian here.

He thought she looked/sounded like a "sad Kelly Osbourne impersonator" and she thought he was American by his voice.

But can YOU tell the subtle (obvious to some) differences between the accents yourself? Should we be more careful when talking to people regarding assumptions as to ethnicity?

Kelly Osbourne has had a row with a man who accused her of being a "sad Kelly Osbourne impersonator".

She was in the queue for the toilets at the Paper nightclub in London when the man made the remarks to her, according to Sky Showbiz.

Osbourne responded angrily, saying: "I am Kelly Osbourne, you American idiot."

The man reportedly walked away from the incident after telling her that he was

I don't get why this article was ever published. I feel dumber having read it.

But yes, I can sometimes tell the difference. The thing is that Americans and Canadians without accents are difficult to tell apart until an "eh?" pops out. Of course if the American is from New York, the south, Wisconsin, or any other easily picked out region, or the Canadian is a hoser, from Newfoundland, or French, then it's easy to tell where they're from.

i honestly cant tell the difference, but there is an easy way i just dont know it

Ahhm from new yawk and youse can't tell on VIOP
Accents don't mean anything as I know many people, like myself , that unconsciously mimic accents after a short period of time.......eh ?

Upwards and downwards convergence. Where you subconsciously (or consciously) alter your speech to come closer to who you are talking to.

The Queen actually has Cockney in her accent!

Its weird, I will have people think im Canadian 50% of the time and the rest they think im American. I guess it just depends on if I say eh.
