I have never met anyone in Ontario that says aboot. You have to go to the Maritimes for that. It's just a cultural reference in the media that makes people think that they hear it from all Canadians.

Accents don't mean anything as I know many people, like myself , that unconsciously mimic accents after a short period of time.......eh ?

Actually, after spending two or three days in Ireland, I picked up a hint of a British accent, which kind of surprised me when I realized I was speaking differently. Furthermore, don't Canadians and people from most other English speaking countries pronounce "Z" as "zed," rather than as "zee," like we Yanks do?

As I don't get to speak to Canadians that often anymore not living at home you'd be surprised how many of us do actually say "aboot" without knowing we are. I'm not kidding and my "aboot" slips out when I'm drunk and because my accent has gotten all screwed up from living in the UK, Amsterdam and now Australia even I hear it when I say it and cover my mouth and start to laugh.

No shit, we really say aboot guys. It may not be a hard oo sound but it is certainly not the American ow sound.
