At then end of the day, if war broke out beween two African country over water, the US would soon step in to defend the country that benefits them the most. Happend in the first gulf war, it'll happen in the future.

We should aid countries based solely on some other criteria besides self interest, which, beside being necessary for survival, is clearly a capitalist impulse that damages the proletariat. Of course there is the faint possibility that we might aid a country not currently useful to us in the vain hopes that it may someday take it's place in the world of modern nation states but that might require our politicians and the people who elect them to see beyond their noses.

Or, you could just let the world get on with its own problems. The trouble with 'aiding' a country on the other side of the world, like Iraq or Afghanistan, is that they've never had nor want equality and democracy. Its like trying to make the west accept communism. It doesnt work for them, and trying to get it to work is like giving a monkey a live grenade, it wont end well.

I think the millions of people that have voted in both of those countries might take exception to the concept you have deemed them unworthy of the same freedoms you enjoy. I also find amazing that you would compare those people to a primate with explosives. It was difficult 200 years ago to simply "just let the world get on with its own problems " and it is downright suicidal to pretend that we can ignore brush-fire wars and think they will not affect the wider world. Water will soon be a commodity and as such will be governed by international treaties and laws, just like any other vital resource. BTW.....the west did accept communism, look at the US State Dept in the 50s if you want to find some communists. I would wonder what the world would look like if we had simply let the world get on with it's own problems in 1917 or 1941 or many years afterward. I'm sure the people who were colonized would have been ecstatic had the white man simply " let the world get on with it's own problems but you can not un-ring a bell. I'm sure given the stellar reputation the Europeans had toward world governance would have us all living in the lap of luxury right now.

I learned this from the top of a trivia beer bottle here in Australia 2 months back! EDIT// Armed, I was just about to get to the poster above when I read yours. I was about to point out that the main powers of the world have let the world get on with it's problems, that is how we got Hitler. Europeans have a VERY short memory and like to think that if they be nice they will be left alone. Too bad there are a lot of people in power see that both as a weakness and an opportunity. How does that walk with a big stick saying go again?

dude...the thing is, there is a water CYCLE.
it would be absolutely pointless to wage a war against a water rich country..because the water cycle would just bring it all back. canada does, and ALWAYS WILL have more than half the world's potable water |

I never said they didnt deserve the freedoms we have, they are just alien to them. You cant look at another countrys way of life through western eyes and judge it. What might seem like our God given rights are completely un-heard of in some parts of the world, and thats where in my problem lies. In the west, taking a life is the ultimate crime, and can mean a lifetime of imprisoment or death. Go into some African countrys and a life is worth less than food. The point im trying to make is that we, the western world, cant just wander into a country half way around the world and change things. How would you feel if a generic middle eastern country invaded your home and put into place a government that could have you shot on the spot for drinking alcohol?
