I'm going to have to roll my eyes at soulis and wolfe. I think that Crysis is utterly deserving of the 98%. Obviously, the graphics and physics are not in question. The gameplay, I thought, was some of the most diverse and enjoyable I'd ever engaged in, especially in single player. They give you a big open area, plop you in it, and you can use whatever tools you want to succeed, whether it be stealth, brute force, firepower, speed and maneuverability, or just plain smarts. It has everything needed to be a tactical shooter and you could even play it that way, or you could play it like the hulk. Whatever floats your boat. It's definitely challenging at delta difficulty, and I especially liked the way they customized the difficulty settings where some objects and features are only available at lower settings. Each difficulty setting higher makes it into more of a tactical and intelligent game (enemies speaking different languages, no crosshairs, no grenade indicators, etc.). There's nothing it does particularly poorly, but their is plenty it does amazingly well.

True. I'm not trying to put the game down at all. I realize that 90% of games and 98% of FPS's are crap, so Crysis being in that 2% is noteworthy, but I suppose I'm just naturally inclined to compare every new FPS to my all time favorites.
In all honesty I don't even think i'm a very big fan of FPS games (singleplayer ones at least), despite the fact that I end up trying almost every one that comes out. My favorite ones have always been not just straight-up shooters but hybrids like System Shock 2 or Deus Ex. Like i said earlier though, I'll download it for sure. I just don't think its going to stay on my computer much longer then it takes to play through it. |

I was actually kind of skeptical up till I played the demo, I thought I was going to be just some incredibly good looking FPS with average gameplay. Then I realized how wrong I was. First I was surprised it worked perfectly on my 7600 GT (all on low but it still looked awesome), then the gameplay just left me looking for my jaw on the floor while throwing a heavy metal stove at an unsuspecting enemy with the strength ability engaged. There's just so much stuff in game and so many ways to do it all, and I think that's what it has over Half Life 2. There were some cool things to do in HL2 that left me begging for more but there wasn't really that much replayability in the game, kinda like CoD, it was a bit linear.
I started straight with Delta and it was incredibly fun. In fact, my conclusion is that COD4 Demo was completely pwnzored by the Crysis Demo. Although I also think the stealth ability is a wee bit overpowered... |
