If you get Basic HL² you should be fine.
By the way, the singleplayer is still great...

i bought HL2 orange i can gift 1 person with a steam account hl2.

but i think all you need to play source mods is the source mdk

half life 2 costs 30$ while the whole orange box costs 45$, Its a great game if you havent played it, otherwise IIRC buying one of the episodes (ep 1 costs 20$) will do just fine to be able to play source mods.

Yeah, all I pretty much want it for is the mods. The SDK. I am not too interested in the actual HL2 game.

I might be way off here, but I think youll need any game that comes with the source engine (such as HL2, Hl2 EP1 or EP2) to be able to run the SDK.
