they didnt , for they one civilisation is over , another begin , but they didnt count with the spanish , so when they fail , the civilication that begun werent they , were mexico (:P)

maybe the mayas didn´t have enough space to continue writing and predicting after the 2012, so the may decided to stop and then update the calendar when the deadline comes.
