Canadians have a lot of space whereas in comparison, Britain is very confined. That has to effect the mindset a bit don't you think?

Well I'm talking about in the cities, so it's not like we're shipping our immigrants out to the Northwest Territories or something.
But Europe in general is much more "minitiarized" and tightly packed than in North America, so you're probably right. But I don't think our urban layout is much different than the American one. I think a big part of our successful multiculturalism is that a) We've got Euro-style socialism, which keeps us from developing as large an impoverished demographic as you see in the USA (not being judgemental, just stating a relavent fact). So our immigrants have less likelihood of becoming impoverished, which causes negative stereotypes to crop up in the public mind, since impoverished people are much more likely to turn to crime. b) We've got a pretty live and let live sort of mindset in Canada. We figure that if they want to assimilate, that's cool. If not, just do your own thing and we'll do ours. Sh!t, most second generation immigrants assimilate a good deal, and by the third generation they're pretty much the same as anybody else. That's always been how it is, with all immigration in history. I'm mostly Scottish, but the Scottish in my family immigrated too long ago for me to know the family history. But I know all about my German side. My great-grandparents came to Canada when they were just married. They spoke no English, and set about farming. My grandfather was born, and didn't learn English until high-school. He used to get in a lot of fights at school because he was a "Kraut" (this was just after WWI). He went and fought for Canada against Germany in WWII, commanding a tank through Italy and later The Netherlands. Then there's my Dad, who you would never know had German blood. The point is, when someone tells a story like that, nobody bats an eye. But then they act like the immigration countries are experiencing today is so outrageous. |

Yep I understand. Seems to me the Canadian Gov. has always had more respect towards it's citizens and residents alike throughout your history. And has always been a haven for US political descenters especially British Columbia. I've never heard of any great Indian massacres, civil wars, or revolution. Personally I'm envious and will emigrate when I have the chance...heh but was counting on a much better currency exchange rate.

Resistance is futile! For the Swedish issue; we can no longer be called a homogenous group of people. I believe that near 20% of our population has their roots in other countries. Historically Sweden has imported labor forces since the 16th century from all over Europe. In the 1960s we had a really big economic boom and a severe lack of workforce so another wave of east European workers were allowed in. Sweden is as much a multi ethnical society as any other nation today. | |

Heck Timo if you had any Pict bloodlines you'd be pure British as far as history gos anyway. Remember the Romans (Italian) owned Britain for a few hundred years and intermarried as well as settled in after army duties.

Thing is, England doesn't have a strong culture like many other countries. Look at our patron saint, he's from Palestine and had probubly never even heard of England, let alone set foot on English soil. Heck, our royal family is German, ffs.
The truth is England has always been multicultural. First it was the Picts, then the Romans pwned them and ran the show for a few hundred years, then they went home, then the vikings came, the the Saxons and Angles took over, then the Normans booshed them then you factor in all the migrations that have taken place over the thousands of years. We're mongrels, and this is just a phase we're going through. It won't happen next week, but things will calm down as new elements our factored into our culture and new immigrants begin to assimiliate that which was already there. |

The key to modernising any weapon is covering them in glue and tossing them in a barrel of M1913 rails until they look "Modern" enough.

I really hope you are not ignoring the obvious.
Previous immigration waves did have considerable encouragement to assimilated where today , in the US, and it sounds like the same in the UK, there is a discouragement to assimilate and as has been mentioned the immediate cry of " racism " when you want an immigrant to learn English. I think this article further makes my point. ( and it has Jessica Alba ) http://townhall.com/columnists/MaryK...no,_and_arnold |

In the UK you have to, else you get branded a racist and locked up.
