aha, the joys of the 6600gt's !!!

Have you tried to check the temp of your card? Once it hits about 96c is starts to do wierd stuff like that, plus incorrect Directx and Video Drivers for your particular card could be at fault. I've known specific cards in the past that needed THEIR drivers, not nvidia ones, since they were non standard.

Grab multiple drivers, Omega ones, etc, try and see if you can get one that works.

Other than that, might be time to change your card to a reliable one (I presume your warranty is gone with that old card?) or you could try a cheap Zalman VGA fan option, although I'm really not sure if any aftermarket options fit that card since it is a funny size and shape from standard cards.

definately looks like overheating to me.

Reality is what we take to be true. What we take to be true is what we believe. What we believe is based upon our perceptions. What we perceive depends upon what we look for. What we look for depends on what we think. What we think depends on what we perceive. What we perceive determines what we believe. What we believe determines what we take to be true. What we take to be true is our reality.

I would also doublecheck to make sure that the video card fan was spinning. I've owned three 6600GTs of (two different brands) that had issues with the fan failing.

And while you're at it, try blowing it out with compressed air (might as well do the rest of your system too). You'd be amazed at how much the temperature can drop just by cleaning the dust out.

Sounds like you may have had a major memory error. (the Memory Consortium standards for non ECC RAM allows for one error per gig of RAM per month.

That means, if you leave your machine on 24/7 you'll eventually get a major memory error, unless you install ECC RAM (Error Detection and Correcting RAM, but that's expensive and built for servers, plus a bit slower than non ECC).

If you reboot often or turn your machine off at night you most likely can avoid a major error, but once you get a major memory error a reboot won't even help. You either have to leave the machine off for a couple of days or pull the RAM out and re-seat it.

That's the first thing I do when ever I have a non-specific localized problem with my machine. You guys would be shocked at how fragile memory control is and how many seemingly unrelated problems can be solved by a simple memory re-seat.

P.S. A graphics card re-seat often helps a troubled video card's memory controller as well.

Did you build the pc yourself? If you did then are you okay to go inside and start reseating things (observing anti-static regime) checking that the fan and runoffs on your GPU aren't blocked by skin/dust! Mkaing sure that your case has enough air coming in and out of it since it is a gaming pc not an office pc.
