oh wow is this possible?

FS NEWS The following is the transcript from an interview that The German EA Community Team had with members of the First Strike development team, and details on how to enter a First Strike Release Competition.

*Havoc: *players will be able to pilot rebel and imperial capitol ships and fighters in a full 3D space environment, The most exiting thing about it is that these ships are to correct scale. So a Corellian Corvette will be 150 meters long, a Lancer Frigate will be 200 meters long, and a Star Destroyer, yes a full blown Star Destroyer will be its full length of 1.6 kilometres

Isn't this a bit of a problem to have a 1.6 km STD on a map?

No, this has only been an initial problem. At the moment, we solved this quite well.
ok so if they are adding a 1.6 km star-destroyer doesnt that make their maps just huuuuuuuuuuuuge? what would you think the size on those maps would be like? and is this due to the tweaked 2142 engine?

edit found this:

How big will the space and ground maps be in comparison to the original BF2142 maps?

*Havoc: *we are able to generate maps that are 8x8x20 kilometres though not all of our maps will be this size cause it'll take a while to fly to the other end. How ever we do tend to make the maps big enough so that you won’t fly out of bounds accidentally. And seeing as our maps can also be 20km high it creates the illusion that were in Full 3D space. However, back in testing you were able to jump out of your X-Wing in mid air and it took about 5 minutes for a player to reach the ground.
any one else excited by a 20km ceiling?

I think that we already have like a 5km one on Kashan Desert, but no one really seems to make use of it, with the clouds being so low.

cant wait for it either, im glad they concentrated on 4,5&6 because i prefer that era to 1,2&3.

i tend to stay away from jets in bf unless they are there and no one is using them -very rare occasions lol.

erm a question though but usually isnt the cloud level quite high up like 20,000-30,000 feet? is it the same in pr? because having a ceiling of 5 miles and really low clouds seems a waste to me...

You'll find that the limits we talk about when discussing maps on PR has to do with mapping the terrain. After a certain size the game can't handle the terrain very well.

A mod like First Strike, there is no terrain really. Its in space, so you just paint everything black, and remove the out of bounds warning and damage. Without that you can go far off the main map terrain without any problems, further extending the map.

e-Gor has supposedly helped them with their space environments, so I'll wait for him to post in this thread for more info.
