Oh and ryan d ale, you forgot the 2 universal first songs; "Satisfaction" by the Stones and the more intermediate level; "House of the Rising Son" by the Animals.

It's an Eko guitar. About 30 years old.

Very very nice indeed, Nice easy necks. I tried to talk my Dad into getting me an EKO when we lived in Italy. He snagged me a used Hofner on a trip to Germany instead. I just couldn't finger that bugger let alone learn on it because of the neck, that's what I was on about electrics for learning.

But you'll do fine with that EKO, so stick with it, and enjoy learning. It'll open up a whole new world for you...plus you'll start getting chicks right off. Just sit under a tree at the nearest park or university and remember to wear your coolguy shades...heh-heh

May I say as Johnny did you do have a really nice guitar there. I didn't notice the heavy gauge strings but as a beginner you will need lower gauge strings until your fingers get stronger or you want the higher gauge for a slightly different sound.

Don't give up with paranoid but all your effort into those hammer-ons and strength into the downpicking (you don't need to use alternate at all in the song, not even in the solo). Getting lessons is definately the way to go. Some people can manage to be self taught... I didn't and I wasted too much time without lessons.

I rock so you don't have to.

I tried to play House of the Rising Son but it's still to difficult for me.

And when I try to play tabs from the internet it almost never works out. I guess the tabs are wrong.

Btw, I had my third guitar lesson today and the teacher is really good and now I can play part of the David Bowie song The Jean Genie. Somewhere in the future we are going to play Space Oddity (one of my favourite songs) but that song is really hard.

I've been playing acoustic guitar for about five years now. As for song suggestions, depends upon what type of music you like. I'm not one of those hard rock screaming my head off guitarists, instead I like playing more mellow melodies/chords.

Start off with some Beatles songs ala Lennon and McCartney (Yellow Submarine is a nice one), then move on to Hotel California, by the Eagles (the solo towards the end takes a while, it has bar chords, but the melody is fairly easy), some Oasis songs (Wonderwall is nice, as well as Masterplan), then Jack Johnson (deceptively hard- trust me), and finally Red Hot Chilli Peppers (Snow, Scar Tissue, Otherside, Californication, etc.)

As others have suggested, old school music is good as well- someone mentioned House of the Rising Sun, and Smoke on the Water, as well as some Rolling Stones songs.

Like I said, depends what type of stream your into, and it will take some time to find the type of music you really enjoy playing. Electric guitar rock may sound cool at first, but when you want to relax on the patio, it gets annoying to play (amps, leads, neighbours, etc).

Also, it's always good to learn some classical/spanish songs first. You learn how to sight read (always a good skill to have) ,and seeing as you are playing acoustic, some chord structures, and the positioning of your right hand fingures and thumb on your left hand.

As you learn more, you might want to try songs by yourself- I'd recommend http://www.ultimate-guitar.com for a great selection of tabs and chords to a wide variety of songs.
