How low can you go?

Posted something up on the suggestions forum the other day, mainly about introducing CS/tear gas, chemicals and gasmasks to PR...

It through a few points of discussion in to the air...

I thought this one belonged in this forum

Just wondering your thoughts…

'How far (violence & cruelty wise) do you think it should be allowed to go in the pixilated world'

i.e.

Is shooting an imaginary pixilated gun fun, but the idea of gassing a pixilated man until he falls to the floor coughing pixilated blood out of his nose and clutching at his throat bad?

Is cutting through someone’s pixilated throat with a pixilated cheese wire is ok?

What about covering someone's pixilated mouth with a pixilated hanky covered in pixilated chloroform?

Are the reasons kids get shot by other kids on BMX bikes the results of games like Grand Theft Auto and Hitman?

What do you think?
Where’s the line?
Have we gone past it already?

...

NO.

People killed people in all sorts of horrible ways before computer games, TV and rap "music".
Using a video game as an excuse is just that, an excuse.

I started playing war with toy rifles in 1st or 2nd grade and have been playing war-type video games for years and I have yet to shoot anyone.

I am not known for my placid demeanor or reluctance to engage in confrontation, either online or in real life but I know the difference between fantasy and reality.

Do violent video games have an effect ?

I'm sure they do as studies have shown but that doesn't mean we need to dumb down the society because some people are too busy or too stupid to raise their children to know the difference between right and wrong.

I'll say what I always say in these kind of threads:

You could make just as good a case that violent videogames prevent violence by allowing us a place to vent our anger. So no, I don't think you can really go too far unless you went too far with the first step.

The problem is, of course, every time someone isn't murdered (and, as I type, billions of people are not getting murdered), no one is going to present it as a statistic of lives saved by violent videogames.

I should also note that if you've ever read the beginning The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, you'll see that before the days of violent videogames and violent movies, some people thought violent books could corrupt the children.

People will always find excuses for the violent actions of others. Before it was books, then the movies, then rap music and now video games. Personally i think some people cant accept that humans are capable of the sheer brutality involved in a cold-blooded killing without some form of 'evil' influence.

Yes, the reason why we have violence is because of violent content on TV and in our games. If there were to be no violence in the media, crime would go down!

Because of that, we should establish special governmental institutions to monitor the media and games for undesirable content. Anything that could possibly negatively influence people should be removed and censored, leaving only things that influence people positively. That way, people will never have the negative stimuli, and will therefore learn to love one another!

Remember, together, we can shape humankind into something better, eliminate all hate, and create a new people, ones who will never know what violence is, because they'll never see it on TV!

nice post Daranz, I agree totally.
In addition we should make all corners rounded and all surfaces padded to prevent any injury in any possible scenario.

Exactly. And agree fully with the rest of the post.

Infact I would go as far as saying games allow you to take away stress or whatever/have fun etc.. doing things you can´t wouldn´t and shouldn´t in the real world.

This topic is a repost. And as games like manhunt and soldier of fortune have shown, there is no line. Censor your self, you have to buy it and if you can buy other forms of foul media this should be no different. Freedom of choice, phuck a nanny state.
