I want a sane planet. Sane people take into account that a gun is a tool.
Others find it easier to think of a gun as a dangerous apparition, rather than the frustrated husband of the woman they're snogging, or that guy they've cut off on the freeway for the third consecutive time, or the extremist views of the suicide bomber. |

Ok sorry for saying that I don't think children should be using semi-automatic assault rifles!

They have a few good ones for $170-$230, available as Curios + Relics. Means no 4473 needs to be filled out. Damn shame, since this was once an "assault rifle". You can also pick up an M91/30 for $80-$90 there. Quote:
![]() ![]() Fairly similar looking, no? The top two are Ruger 10/22s. They have 10 round magazines (OMGZORZ! EVIL) and shoot a .22LR bullet. Everyone laughs at the .22LR since it's such a light round. However. The funny thing is... Cops hate .22LR/.22/.22S/22WMR because on that one lucky shot, where it misses your body armor... it has just enough energy to rip around inside your body, rip up your internal organs, and not leave an exit wound. The bottom one is the Ruger Mini-14. Based loosely off of the m-14 design, (to some extent, the 10/22 is as well, atleast externally). It's one of those famous "assault rifles" since there are so many enthusiasts who prefer to own synthetic (hence one of the few types I could find) rifles for ease of maintenance. Finally, the two rifles I learned on (I was *gasp* 12 when I shot it.) ![]() ![]() American M-1 garand.. often said to be one of the best battle rifles in the world. I shot a Russian, not yugo (though the picture is yugo) SKS with a synth stock. Quite an "evil" looking "assault" rifle. You know though.... As evil and battle ready as those two rifles were, my friend, and her father never held up a bank... They never started WW3. They were and still are very good people. They hunt with those weapons of war because they like the feel of them. Personally, in a world of rifles that are rigged up so they can shoot a fly off of my ass at 1000yds, to be able to go out hunting with a rifle built in the 40s and 50s, and down a deer at 100yds with ironsites appeals to me. But it's a shame since I just must be one of those "Crazy Gun-Toting Americans" for wanting to shoot a Semi-Automatic "battle" or "assault" weapon, and my opinion just doesn't matter. One last thing... Semi-autos are much more fun for young kids to shoot. No bolt to cycle and have magazine feed issues with, and simply more fun. Load up 6 magazines at 10 rounds a pop (or at 30 rounds a pop if you can find and own them) and go to your shooting stall/bench/rest, pop off those 60-180 rounds, without having to stop to reload after 5 rounds. It's much more convenient. Next to "Assault Rifle", "Semi Automatic" seems to be one of the new anti-gun catch phrases, and i can't gather why. I know a few hunters who upon missing a vital area with the first shot, were glad they could follow up quickly to avoid having to track down a bleeding animal. Oh yeah. I work in a sporting goods store right outside of NYC. I sell guns. I cannot legally own a gun in NYC for the next 4-5 months, but I can sell them outside of NYC. I could own them if i lived outside of NYC. What makes an 18 year old in Garden City, Nassau more mature than an 18 or even 20 year old in Floral Park, Queens? Seems to me, that on my 21st B-day, I'm getting my long gun permit ($200-$300 every 3 years that goes to the city to let me own a gun.... because... they want cash). Then I'm getting a rifle. Then I'm getting shit-faced in the same night. Because some genius, on figuring out age limits for things... put the legal age to own a pistol, rifle, and drink, on the same day/evening. Not the greatest of ideas, imho. (disclaimer: I have no intention of being stupid, and the bolt lock and triggerlock will be on the rifle, in its gun cabinet at home while I'm out getting plowed.)

Reality is what we take to be true. What we take to be true is what we believe. What we believe is based upon our perceptions. What we perceive depends upon what we look for. What we look for depends on what we think. What we think depends on what we perceive. What we perceive determines what we believe. What we believe determines what we take to be true. What we take to be true is our reality.

I never really understood the fear of rifles in general. I think of a semi-automatic pistol as being far more scary to have freely available than a rifle. Sure, you might be able to pick someone off at 500 yards, but a pistol... You can walk into a busy shopping mall food court and no one will have any clue you are armed. Think of how fast a crazy nutjob can kill a family of five when he can get five feet from them without drawing any sort of suspicion. The handgun's ability to be easily concealed makes it much more dangerous than a rifle, in my opinion. As far as letting kids handle guns? My family used to take trips to a mountain cabin in southern Georgia when I was a kid. My old man liked to hunt, so we had a couple twelve gauges and a .38 Special. If I learned anything from these experiences ( I was 8-10ish, possible younger), was that guns can be scary, scary things, and a 12-gauge can be tough on a young boy's shoulder. I am not a gun nut, though I do keep my twelve gauge in the closet for the occasional skeet-shooting trip. I have no ammunition for it, and I rarely take it out of it's case.
