Apparently I have Scoliosis.

Yeah. Went to the doctors today and found out I've got Scoliosis - basically, a curvature of the spine. It really shouldn't cause me any problems until I'm old and decrepit (well, nearly), but I'll still be going to the gym and swmming some laps around the pool (speedo?) to try and improve the situation. Maybe I'll take up jogging.

Anybody else have it that can shed some light on the seriousness of it? From what I've gathered, it really isn't that big of a deal if treated properly and identified early.

Oh, I also picked up a pretty neat book about JTF2 (Canada's Special Operations/Counter-terrorism unit). It claims to compile all known information about the unit, but it weighs in at a mere 200 pages, coupled with faily large text.

Okay, so your choice - talking about the curvature of my spine, or JTF2 (aka 1337 5peshuL 4Ces!!).

Thats usually only for around 6 months to a year after having surgery. My friend Ben just had surgery to repair his Scoliosis - which went rather well. He dosn't have to wear a brace at all but is very limited on what he can do for around 6 months, including no major physical activities such as sports, weight lifting, gymnastics, etc.

For Ben - he is not able to join the military or any professional sports, even after the surgery. They just wont accept him b- despite his ability to do basically everything just normal. Anyway - it dosn't effect you much when you are young, but as you grow older it becomes more serious of a problem and should definitely be fixed as soon as possible.

I am a nurse practitioner and I frequently work in an orthopaedic clinic. The severity of your scoliosis depends on the degree of curvature and how old you were at time of diagnosis. There are many people with mild scoliosis who have no limitations on activity level; as a matter of fact, most people have some degree of mild scoliosis and just don't know it. There are different treatments for scoliosis. The TLSO brace, chiropractic treatment, stretching exercises, and finally surgery involving placing metal rods on either side of your spine. The treatment success depends, again, on degree of curvature and age at diagnosis. I would be happy to answer any further questions you may have (and then I will send you a bill ;P)

I have muscular scoliosis too. I shot up so fast and the doctors didn't keep an eye on me lkike they do with kids that grow fast nowadays. I have a slightly curved lower spine and it has caused problems in the past and probably will when I am older.

Getting in and out of the simulators at Bovington was a pain for me. They say the height limits are 1.5" taller than me at 6'3.5" but combined with long legs and a less than flexible back I was worried at times getting in and out!

I suggest you build up your back muscles to support you when pushing/lifting heavy stuff and if it's lower spine area that's curved, situps with your knees slightly bent and hands in front of you is the proscribed way to do them now.

I'm not sure about the degree of curvature - I'll probably know on Saturday when I get the X-ray's back. I'm 17.

What activities are suggested in general? Running? Swimming? Weight lifting (that would be funny to watch ;p)?
