Core 2 Duo CPUs, a Question.

I'm looking at either getting a Quad Core CPU, or a Dual Core, but what I want to know is their speeds.

What I mean is...

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=632053

Will that be 2.33Ghz, or 4.66Ghz because its a dual core cpu.

I'm confused.

Thanks Nick.

2.33

Dual core doesn't mean that it's twice as fast mhz wise... but, there are two cores to share the work load.

The architecture of the core 2 duo and core 2 quad chips however, is so good that a 2.33 ghz c2d chip can out-perform a 3.0ghz non-c2d dual core chip (for the most part)

Righto, thanks.

How much more powerful would you say these chips are than normal ones? Like what would be the equivalent for a 2.33Ghz Dual Core?

Thanks Nick.

Two processors stacked on one chip. That's 2x 2.33ghz or 4.66ghz total processing power. here's the same product in a different advertisement stating 2x:

e6750 ftw, but if you're getting such a good chip, don't skimp on the mobo...

I had a £100 mobo, it broke, and the difference will probably be in single digits fps wise, so I'm not overly fussed.

Thanks Nick.

Wrong. It's two different cores, running at the same speed. They tend to share a cache, however.

The difference is that you can stack processes on different cores (currently there are a very very small number of programs designed to use more than one core at the same time). This frees CPU cycles on each core. Would be a good idea to put all your windows apps on one core and the game on the other one.

Stay away from quad core. They're not "true" quad cores, but two dual cores put together -- less efficient than a "true" quad core in it's design.

If you want a good processor, the E6750 just came out like a month ago, is fast at 2.66ghz, AND it uses the new 1333Mhz FSB.
