Well the skeleton in the market square gives you an idea of how little organization there is and the huge amount of brass lying around makes me wonder who is funding all of this.
But I have read before that in certain areas, what was a few rounds flying back and forth turned into a full fledged sh tstorm as soon as the cameras showed up. Why doesn't the UN do something there ? Peacekeepers ? Isn't that term a bit of a misnomer ? I would think that either nobody should be there or the country should be taken over and disarmed but to have people standing around watching the daily chaos serves little or no purpose. |

I find it hard to believe that the UN being there is not at least serving some purpose. I would imagine that some of the civilians tangled up in this would benefit from the UN's presence. However there may be a better solution? Do you think that a Nato security type force would do a better job? Would it be beneficial for Nato to start engaging them? Maybe it would unite all these gangs against a common enemy (Nato) and avert them from killing each other. However would the toll on the civilians still not be the same? The only thing with a more aggressive national presence I see is that it would probably be able to put a real dent in their numbers after a short time if the gangs were engaging them like they are in the pics. I'm not opposing your views per say but just thinking out loud about how it would play out. Just curious about this type of "war".

Not U.S. soldiers but these guys are the ones who need three round burst instead of full automatic on their rifles.

From what I've heard the UN mission in Liberia was a success, maybe Im wrong? Info available here. http://unmil.org/
![]() Anthony Lloyd, himself a former soldier in the British army and a Northern Ireland and Gulf War veteran: "The men inside (the APC) might have been UN but they were playing by a completely different set of rules. They were Swedes; in terms of individual intelligence, integrity and single-mindedness I was to find them among the most impressive soldiers I had ever encountered. In Vares their moment had come." |

A quick Google shows no recent coverage other than UN sites but I didn't look very hard.
From what little I read they stopped the outright warfare. That is good to hear, although the timeliness of the action leaves something to be desired. My point in the precious post was how do have " peace" keepers when there is no peace ? |

Sometimes peace keeping consists of standing there with a bigger gun that the two combatants and telling them to behave. They might pick on eachother once in a while, but they most likely will not go back to all out brawling.

I did some more searching and the only recent thing I can find is about how horrible the conditions are in Liberia and that UNMIL forces helped the police beat protestors and some journalists.
The UN has stopped the fighting but there are already accusations that the new government is three times as corrupt as the last one. My point is that imperialism might have some merits because it really doesn't matter to the average person who runs the show as long as they do it well. It's very pithy to say you would rather be free and dead than a colonial subject and be well fed and safe from random violence. I would gladly accept being a subject of the British Empire if the alternative was living in horrible conditions with the likelihood of violent death being about 95%. |
