Interesting. I wonder if anyone was ever convicted of anything based on those laws.

IANAL, but downloading a file might be difficult to prove. Having personal copies is legal under many jurisdictions (not sure about UK), and therefore, having a copy of a file on your computer can be considered just that (and proving that you never bought an original copy is somewhat impossible). Although under DMCA you're not allowed to break DVD's CSS to make personal copies, you're not explicitly prohibited from having such copies. This is why RIAA and MPAA in the US mostly go after uploaders. I'm not sure what the legal status of downloading itself is in the US, but from what I've read, apparently downloaded copies can be considered legal under certain circumstances in Canada. Then again, just because it's unenforceable doesn't mean it's legal.

Also, I have no idea what I'm talking about.

Back on topic, interesting movie, I just hope that no one will come suggesting, that a .50 sniper rifle should shoot down a helicopter

I have it waiting on Netflix, so I won't watch it now, but I really hope the movie is at least half as good as the book.

I saw the movie back when I visited the US during the Easter holiday, and it was pretty decent. Some rather weird story twists, especially near the end, but meh. Decent action.

And even if it is legal, I still wouldn't watch it this way.
