Jarhead

So I went and saw this movie with some friends lastnight, and it was what I expected; fairly well done. A view at the psychological nightmare which faced soldiers in the first Gulf War, but isn't limited in nature to just that conflict. Several groups of people walked out of the theater about halfway through, because (as I figured they might) they thought it was going to be a Black Hawk Down style shoot-em up in the deserts of Kuwait/Iraq (it is not).

As I had read on a CNN website, and I agree with it, the few combat sequences that were portraited were not lengthy or action packed, but they were accuratley portraited. As usual, the verdict is that the book is much better than the film.

If you choose to see it, you will get a good chuckle from time to time at some of the antics and 'jokes' but it is also a sobering experience in the fact that it revists the question, did the Military really provide enough, if any 'psychological de-briefing' for our troops returning home, as well as touching on possible underlying causes of Gulf War Syndrome.

Overall, as a 'non-combat' war film I'd give it a 4 out of 5. Or as best described by a CNN reviewer: In the end, "Jarhead" feels remote, uncertain of whether it wants to make a big statement, or if it wants to make one at all.

Your thoughts, comments on the film?

Trailer seems a lot more action packed. He doesn't even see any action in the book.

I hear that many Marines were extremely insulted by the book/movie.

Yeah it did. It doesn't put the corps in the best of light, but the guy wrote it in a very straight forward way and described the parts before and after going to Iraq which I found interesting too.

and yea the book wasnt very flatering to the Corps

most whove read it look at him as being a lazy substandard marine and even as a non veteran i can see how theyve got a valid argument

If it was anything like the book, I won't be seeing it. 300 pages of bitching.

Haha thats kinda crap getting insulted just because it shows the marines making mistakes instead of being heroes blah blah blah.

Good review. I like to see review from real people like you guys.
Not these so-called professional 'reviewer' people or whatnot.

From the trailer and a few Foxx/Jake Gyl interviews Jarhead
seemed to lack action, but still looked interesting. Hope to see it soon.
