Was a big fan of the original Medieval: Total War. Probably should get myself a copy of II.

You've never played it have you....It's a strategic game/RTS, but company of heroes is one of the cookie-cutter RTS's of the last 12 years - the Total War series had an entirely different thing going for it.

Actually COH had a few things that even I liked that made it different from the other RTS's.

Also, the Total War series is a hybrid of Turn-based strategy and real time tactics.

Like Dawn of War, which it very strongly resembles in certain aspects of the gameplay and design, Company of Heroes is not a cookie-cutter RTS. In some sp missions and in skirmish and mp, you get some of the classical basebuilding, but the resource system does not resemble that used in most RTS games. It also has kick-ass explosions. What more could you possible ask for?

Well, for Medieval 2: I got the Pope to call a crusade on me lol. I've had many epic defense battles. For instance, there was one battle where I only had a general and about 8 town militias and 2 sergeant spearmen. I was defending against the the Holy Roman Empire's massive army. They battered my walls with catapults so there was 3 ways in(including breaking the gates). So I let them come and just choke pointed them to death. They had way better infantry, cavalry, and missile troops. However, for some reason they decided to walk trebuchets through the holes in the wall, and those died right inside the choke point, remotely making the situation better. Then bam, they charge in. A bunch of guys are lost on both sides and their general dies. One group starts to withdraw, and the panic spreads to the rest. GG!

Oh I also figured out the best trick with defense if you don't have enough troops, but you have one or two siege units within your base(ballistas are best). This one battle I had 1 Feudal Cav, 1 Armoured Spearmen, 1 Sergeant Spearmen, 2 ballistas. I had the spearmen on the walls to prevent cavalry from dominating them, but to also enable the towers to shoot. I had the ballistas facing each other, parallel to the walls and decently far back. This meant the second the troops came in, my ballistas would fire(with special fire ammo) and piece the fuck out of the troops. I was fighting an army about 3x larger, and it was supposed to be a win for the other side. I've also done a similar thing but having guys at the gates. Let me tell you, not a good idea, your guys get pounded the fuck out. by the enemy AND your ballistas. But you must have guys on the walls, otherwise the AI will charge straight for your ballistas.

I always had the pope on my ass in the first one so I would take Rome, raze it to the ground and periodicly wipe out his feeble attempts to regain power.

I really like MTW 2. I haven't played it in a while though. It is one of those games that can be so satisfying when you get it right but painfull when you don't.

I hate getting set up to assualt a castle only to grind your army into sawdust trying to get through to the interior. If the castle has a small force but good defences its tough.

Cheers,

Close your eyes and imagine some really cool military picture, or better yet a really funny picture in this space. I said close your eyes damnit!
