Bridge too far FTMFW! Best WWII film in the history of ever. It cockslaps SPR in the face, tears its heart out, consumes it and then throws the tattered corpse into a vat of acid.
Too late the hero, Burma I believe, British. The Longest Day is superb. Tora! Tora! Tora!, though thats the attack on pearl harbor. |

The key to modernising any weapon is covering them in glue and tossing them in a barrel of M1913 rails until they look "Modern" enough.

Quite. But you'd need an interval.
Though it could challenge Bridge Too Far for the "world's greatest" title if it were. but its not, so it cant. |

Guadalcanal Diary premiered in 1943, very cheery depiction of war compared to todays war films. They do show the annihilation of a platoon, and Marines fighting with limited supplies at least. I swear in some war films from the 50s and 60s barely anyone dies.

Someone mentioned "Come and See".... I, too, reckon it should be on your list.
If you want to see the brutal, clinical way Einsatzgruppe "B" operated then this film has a scene that will leave you speechless, numb & quite uncomfortable. It's not a gory scene, it leaves a lot to the viewers' imagination, a sign of a good director and respect for the intelligence of the viewer. Don't watch before bedtime. Quote:

I agree with Eggenberg, that specific scene in Come and See is incredibly moving and it does leave you speechless. Its something Hollywood would probably never get away with showing.
Another fantastic WW2 based film that I recommend anyone to watch is The Downfall. Bruno Ganz plays the part of Hitler faultlessly. The film has an incredible depressing "end of it all as we know it" feeling which is consistent throughout the film. The madness of the Third Reich command in its last days, the mass suicides, sending waves of old men and children at the Russians, its chilling but compelling. I highly recommend this film, its become one of my all time favorites. |

Maybe you should watch "Stalingrad" sometimes, great Swedish/German production i believe. Really dramatic.
