Interested in Starting to Model

I know nothing about modeling at the moment, but I have always wanted to get into it. So, thought I'd finally give it a shot. I have searched the forums with a few different terms which came up with some results but I want a bit more clear answer.

Anyway, what do you guys prefer as a good free beginner modeling program? I'd be happy with a trial, demo, or free program.

Also, any recommended tutorials/tutorial Web sites would be nice.

Thanks in advance!

try Gmax if u want a free one. u can get it at www.turbosquid.com along with some tutorials. also try www.highend3d.com or www.3dm3.com for tutorials. i would'nt do this yet though but u can get a trial version of 3ds max from www.discreet.com , but wait until u get better at it before that. gmax looks similiar to 3ds max. theirs also a good version of max on some torrents but we wont get into that.

Is gmax sort of a dumbed down version of 3ds max? They look very similar. What do the R-DEV's use to model?

most of us use 3ds max. gmax is just an old version of it.
