There are a couple of programs, try google.

Your motherboard+CPU should have a thermometer or something, connected to a program that you might already have installed on your PC, so try looking around.

I have an nvidia and right click on properties gets me to the card controls but I don't know how to window the game so I can see both at the same time.
I tried putting a fan right in front of the case and checking with Al-Tab it seemed like the temps went up but I coun'dt be sure because the Alt+Tab takes too long sometimes.

Nvidia control panel has two versions, basic and advanced. The basic only has a single temp bar but the advanced has an additional graph that tracks temp changes over 1.5 hours so you can see if a certain game is causing heat spikes.

With any heat problem, use compressed air to remove all dust from inside your case, the mother board, the video card, and every fan vent. Dust builds up quickly and acts like a wool blanket that can easily overheat components even if they're well ventilated.

Using your own breath to clear dust seems easy, but you spit out water globs that can lead to the obvious.
