Nice post.
I am not inclined at the moment to make a lengthy and detailed reply but I will say that while you use logic very well we differ on the core issue of whether we are part of something greater than us or just really smart monkeys.
So when all is said and done there is no way, here at least, for me to convince you otherwise and while I'm sure I would learn more from continued debate I simply cannot be reasoned out of my beliefs.

In all sincerity, this statement really does make me feel sorry for you that your view of existence is so limited and finite.

No, it should stand high above them, as the final emancipation of the human mind from the shackles of superstition and madness.

I would also mention this is a thread about global warming that has been off-topic for pages ( lockable ) and all about religion for several pages ( inst-lockage! ) and I would like to drag it back on topic and keep it going.

I remember reading in the mid 80's about the concept of running "platoons" of cars on the freeway using computers and some of the existing or prototype anti-collision radars.

I recently went out to my sisters on Long Island and the my inability to effectively use the cruise control made me think about that again.
Millions of gallons of gas nationwide could be saved simply by streamlining the traffic flow on freeways and it would be cost effective because future improvements in technology and power sources would still be able to use them.

It would however need absolutely bulletproof software and a public willing to abdicate a certain amount of control to a machine which is scary enough as it is.

There are a lot of things that could be done to reduce energy usage. Some get done but, most do not because of people's laziness and government corruption in the form of special interest influence, bi-partisan bickering, and flat out ignorance. It's really quite sad.

It is said that you should never talked about religion or politics but it is the absence of these discussions that result in the ignorance of both. On important issues such as energy, we end up wasting our time talking about the basics of citizen's rights and government overgrowth which should already have been commonly understood and agreed upon in advance so that important issues that require timely action can be handled in a timely manner instead of always waiting until we're on the brink of potential disaster.

Great

I'm drunk and you finally said something I can disagree with.

basics of citizen's rights and government overgrowth

That to me is the core of the issue.

Rights cannot exist w/o responsibility.

The government grows by inverse proportion to the citizens desire to be responsible.

That's exactly what I meant... how did you think i meant it? Maybe I wasn't clear enough.

When I say "wasting time talking about citizen's rights and government overgrowth" I mean that these issues are important but should have been discussed a LONG time ago instead of 50 years of ignoring them while the government get out of hand, then the people are presented with an energy crisis issue, but instead we still have to deal with citizens and government.

Like when it's time to take a test in school but then everyone argues about where the school should be located, who should be in charge, and what the test should be about. If we had discussed those issues earlier, we could talk about the task at hand.. the test.

So in other words, people give me that "look" they give when you discuss politics or religion, as if it's some kind of forbidden taboo topic, when it's one of the most important topics of all. Unfortunately we, as a society, have NOT talked about it and now have to spend time doing that before we can get to other issues at hand. That's what I meant by waste of time; it should already be done.

I'm still amazed, though, that people push for socialism when history has proven its catastrophic results.

I'm not exactly genius but I when I talk about it I get the same look and the comment" I'm not interested in politics"....well it's interested in you and you had better take a look.
"Welll they are all the same anyway" is another favorite line but look at what Gore would do as President compared to to what Bloomberg would do.
I would vote for that guy in a minute because I have watched him preside over a devastated city and keep it goin with little or no idealogical BS.
So I reject this notion that politics doesn't matter or that they are all the same.
The problem is that people are lazy and don't want to take the time to learn about people who control their lives.

"Get rid of all these rotten politicians that we have in Washington, who are nothing more than corporate toadies," said Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the environmentalist author, president of Waterkeeper Alliance and Robert F. Kennedy's son, who grew hoarse from shouting. "This is treason. And we need to start treating them as traitors."

Maybe there is just a touch of fascism included in the GW movement ?

I know that in response to that statement I am going to spill some oil into the drain, leave all the lights on, buy and empty a can of Freon into the air and anything else I can do to be a "traitor" to the their cause.

Some 8,500 people have fled the slopes of an Indonesian volcano after it spewed ash, smoke and debris, as the volcanology office raised its warning to the highest level.

If what I have read is correct, all the carbon offsets ever created were just negated by that one volcano.....perhaps we should sacrifice virgins to the volcano gods to save the Earth.....that makes as much sense as snot nose Kennedey's words.

And after the volcanoes have been dealt with, I propose butt plugs for all of the livestock! But let's not stop there! We radio collar moose and bears and stuff, why not butt plug them at the same time?

Spent half the day with my brother's GF who is a green and the fervor and passion remind me of religous people.
Her assertion that I can't possibly know anything about global warming since I haven't seen the Goracle's "documentary" is absolutely frightening.

You might have been kidding about the butt plugs but they are experimenting with reduced methan diets for cows.
