Europe considering ban of cars...

Europe considering ban of cars capable of more than 101 mph

http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsAr...llCars/225964/

Quote:
Autocar is reporting that the European Parliament will consider a proposal this fall to ban all cars capable of reaching speeds over 101 mph. The proposal can be traced back to a man named Chris Davies, a Liberal Democrat Member of the European Parlaiment for the North West of England. Davies argues (try not to laugh while reading his words) that "between 1994 and 2004 the power of new cars went up by 28 per cent, making them a lot heavier, and so increasing the amount of CO2 they put out, even though no country raised its speed limit to allow cars to use this increased power."

The logic is so flawed here, we don't know where to begin. According to Davies, giving a car more power makes it heavier, thus increasing the amount of CO2 it emits. First of all, cars are heavier these days primarily because most developed nations, Europe and the United States included, have federally mandated that cars be made safer, and to achieve this, manufacturers have had to design new safety systems that add weight to cars. Things like airbags, crumple zones, side-impact bars, and the like are the primary reason cars have gotten heavier. While enlarging the displacement of an engine, switching from four to six cylinders or adding a supercharger could make a car heavier while giving it more oomph, more power for its own sake is neither a necessary nor sufficient condition for a car gaining weight.
wtf

It's ridiculous in a way but it also makes sense.
Why would you need to travel faster than 101 mph? Except for fun?
Ask yourself that, seriously and then say that proposal is totally whacko.
So, you can all say byebye to ;
Porsche
Lamborghini
Ferrari
Jaguar
Koenigsegg
Lotus
and a whole lot of other brands of powercars.....
If you see that happening anytime soon, give me a call.

I think the guy has SOME merit but this is one proposal that won't get through.

Autobahn? Having fun isn't necessarily dangerous.

Autobahn is not a valid reply as you don't HAVE to travel at 101 mph or more.
That you are allowed to is of no consequence to the argument.

No, having fun is not necessarily dangerous but Murphys' law says that if crap CAN happen it WILL happen.
2 days ago a professional speedway driver crashed and died while racing and I'm sure he had a lot of fun right up to the time when he crashed...

I'm not arguing for a ban of fast cars (or motorcycles), all I'm saying is I know what this guy is after and I sort of sympathize with his suggestion.
People are driving way too carelessly these days...

Don't look now, but similar legislation has been suggested in the U.S. In fact, there are some liberal democrats who want to, just like what is being proposed in Europe, place a driving tax on anyone who drives in congested cities.

When will liberals learn? Placing a tax on driving will not prevent driving, just like cigarette taxes don't prevent smoking. Higher taxes are only good for two things: declaring class warfare on the wealthy and driving away (pun intended) business to go abroad.

Thank you, but I'm keeping my ride:

Max speed isn't the only issue. A Porsche or Lamborghini or similar will not just have high top-speed, also good handling and acceleration.

That may be so but in traffic you also have to take other traffic into account. It doesn't really matter if you have a supergood handling and you as a driver have the reflexes of a F1 driver if "other" traffic decides to not cooperate with you.

That was an attempt at saying accident's happen that are not the fault of either the car nor the driver and that the higher the speed the more severe the accident may be.

Now who was the dumb bloke who wanted to ban trucks??
How in the name of Holland would you get your daily groceries? Who would deliver that precious gas for those powercars you don't want banned?
Who will deliver all the spare parts to repair the powercars after you crash it into a rock wall at 4 mph?
Banning trucks is not an option. Spend more money on researching better engines for them.
