This particular city has forgotten everything that has to do with public transportation. Go to any given bus stop, and you'll be waiting for days.

Fast cars are better all-round performers. They have not only a higher speed, but: more grip, better handling and faster acceleration. So, if an 18-wheeler is hurtling up behind with it's brakes out, and you're stopped at the lights, would you rather be in a Lotus Elise or a Nissan Micra? Using this guys (lack of) logic, you could argue that faster and better cars are, as long as driven responsibly, much SAFER than slower, older cars. We must also consider who buys these different types of car. Who is more trustworthy on the road: A 27 year old in a Porsche, or an 80 year old in a Vauxhall Caliber?

Why are these people trying to squeeze the life out of us? If they had their way, all tobacco companies would be burnt to the ground, all pubs would be turned into children's playgrounds and all the motorways would turn into bicycle lanes. Safer? Yes. Fun? No. I'd rather live in a quite dangerous world where we are allowed to have fun than a slightly less dangerous world where all the life has been squeezed out of us. It's crazy.

Besides, you're all forgetting something: who can conclusively prove, without a shadow of doubt, that our cars are single-handedly murdering the birds and the bees? If you want to make your commute uncomfortable, unpleasant and ridiculously long to stop a few CO2 molecules from escaping, then be my guest, but i'd rather sit in my air conditioned, comfy car listening to the radio thanks very much. That's why I don't use a bike. Besides, in the event of an accident, I don't trust those handlebars to throw themselves between me and the concrete and save my life. No way. PLUS, they reckon that a 20 minute bike ride through Central London is equivalent to smoking 20 cigarettes in terms of the damage it can do to your lungs. Don't fancy that myself...

ok so first you make an argument that the exhaust of a car is not harmful to "birds and bees", and then say that 20 minutes of riding a bike through london is like smoking 20 cigarettes.

The driving force (pun #3) behind limiting car speeds to 101 mph is to reduce CO2 emissions. But you have to ask yourself, seriously, what percentage of cars actually travel around at 100+ mph to cause excess CO2? 5%? 1%?

The news story states the theory behind limiting cars to 101 is that it will cause manufactures to build smaller, less powerful engines, but smaller engines can produce just as much CO2 as a larger, faster car depending on the engine, driving style, and engine maintenance, and I would submit that someone who owns a car that goes more than 101mph takes care of their car much better than the guy with the Yugo.

Aside from CO2, what is the biggest visible pollutant from emissions? Smog; that low hanging cloud of vapor and soot that is emitted from..... trucks. Yes, the vast majority of smog is created from soot spewing trucks. Why not ban those?

If Europe REALLY wanted to reduce CO2 emissions from autos, wouldn't it make more sense to just ban high levels of CO2 emissions? Automakers would produce low or zero CO2 vehicles that can travel at any speed. Then you can drive 300mph to drop off grandma, pick up your groceries, and all without making baby jesus cry.

More laws, more rules more layers of corruption and bureaucracy and in the end the sun flares for 3 weeks straight and burns us all to a crisp anyway.

That's impossible! The sun has no effect on our planet! Besides, our cars will create a layer of smog so thick that solar flares harmlessly bounce off!

Why? Plenty of factories in London. And that's not much a convincer as to why I should ride a bike instead of drive a car.

I think that cars are having maybe a tiny affect on the environment, but that affect is too negligible to make we want to sit on a hard bike saddle in the rain all day, instead of driving to and from places. Or, if i'm going on holiday, i'd rather get on a plane for a couple of hours than swim, or get a boat, or a train. Sorry, but until you can prove that i'm killing the planet, I shall continue to drive cars and go on planes. Besides, the dinosaurs are going to come back soon and kill us all anyway...

You don't get rid of the problem and expect the issue to stop, you need to give the planet enough resources to fix itself.

(*Cough* ... deforestation)

Well that is a load off my mind, glad I don't have to worry about that.

How bad is deforestation worldwide ?
I know there are stats that show the US has more forest now than 200 years ago but is there any effort to replant in other places like the Amazon basin ?

In some ways this is pretty simple. If you can't breathe the air out the tailpipe of a car and it will kill a plant then it can't be all that good overall for the planet, where we happen to live.

I can see the reason for the military to have a 13,000lb High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle but I don't see why Goofball the pindick needs to commute 25mi a day into Manhattan everyday with one.
I'm not picking on the hummer as there are many other examples but that is the sexy one.
Where do we stop ?
