Great idea, there is no need to travel in excess of those speeds unless the job you have requires it. In which case you'll surely be able to request a special permit.

I agree very much on the heavy car thing and also on the 100mph idea.
I live 30 miles outside London, and there are more SUVs per Km here than there are in the country side. THe roads around here, many of the smaller ones, can be totaly consumed by SUVs due to the massive width of the car and the small width of the road. Also, the power and general momentum, force that they produce is uterly pointless when most barely touch 40mph on the roads here. Light cars but with very powerfull engines go fast and produce average CO2 levels, but SUVs, massively large and heavy cars need powerfull engines to go atall and they block up roads, parking spaces and kill many more tan small fast cars. So if you removed a large numebr of SUVs, you would solve 2 problems in one swell swoop = wieght restricitons on cars are the only legal, common sence, fair way to remove SUVs. |

Not entirely true, the harder the engine has to work, the more fuel is required, the more fuel being burnt, the higher the emissions.
Holding your speed at 70MPH takes a lot less power than getting there. Its also important to take into account what gear you are in, hence why if you hold in 5th/6th gear doing 70, your idling unless you have something less than a 1.4, which normally allows for around 40MPG+, compared to driving around town, stopping and starting, which would lower it to 20-25MPG. Speed has a little to do with it, but not everything. Basically it comes down to power, weight, engine capacity, gear, speed, the forces applied on the car, if you have the AC on, if the windows are shut and about a million other things. |

Heavy cars have more friction - mu (sp) times R, R = mass of car (kg) times by gravity, mu (sp) = from 0 to 1, so on a road where mu is 0.2: 0.2 times by (600 times by 9. So light but fast cars can be ok but with the 100mph limit, fast cars woudl not be so fast. So......a new breed of ultra fast acceleration but low top speed cars woudl have to be developed, particuarly interesting IF wieght restrcitions were thrown in aswell. Personal, i love the idea of a really really light, super fast acceleration car, but then again i dont drive (not yet - 2 months and BAM), so my view is horribly questionable.

i think we should remove the main cause of CO2 emissions in the world.
The human race. Think about it. So many people you've met in your life that are just a perfect waste of space and they're allowed to live and blow their nasty CO2 all over the place. Such a shame. |

Reality is what we take to be true. What we take to be true is what we believe. What we believe is based upon our perceptions. What we perceive depends upon what we look for. What we look for depends on what we think. What we think depends on what we perceive. What we perceive determines what we believe. What we believe determines what we take to be true. What we take to be true is our reality.

Lotus Exige, Westfield XTR4, Caterham SuperlightR etc are all proper drivers cars! Beautiful handling, extremely light, small engines and mind blowing performance ... just without a CD player or space for the shopping.

It would be more sensible to fit a mechanical speed limiter to cars preventing them hitting 100mph. which is the magic number for an instant driving ban here in England. Of course that would have to be electronically linked to traffic satellites to prevent people taking the mechancial limiter off (except for emergency vehicles, etc)
ps. My mates huge ford mondeo or whatever it is does 2500rpm in 6th gear at 100mph and he tends to drive at that speed far too often on roads round here. His car will reach 130mph and I don't think he sees the consequences of his speed and definitely doesn't handle traffic spacing correctly at all when driving. |
