It's weird because I just read an old Sci Fi novel by Isaac Asimov " Nightfall " and it describes a similiar event on a fictional planet.
But it is not an apocolypse but rather a planet that has six suns and only gets a total solar eclipes every 3000 years.
When it gets dark, the stars come out and everybody flips and starts lighting fires and the civilization crashes.
What if the solar activity just burns out our electronics and plunges the world into techo-darkness ,,...... I bet solar and wind energy would come in handy then.
Like I said......................learn to swim.

I think this is a good decision. People should be using bikes and other forms of transportation for the good of you, Earth, and your wallet.

Well, "saving the planet" might be pointless if the earth's poles reverse. The magnetic field around the earth is the only thing that deflects the majority of solar radiation from burning us to a crisp and lately it's been in decline. Some believe it's overdue to flip and just adds another line of interest to 2012.

The earth's poles have flipped dozens of times in the past anywhere from 5k to over 50m years cycles. Discovery had a really good documentary about it a while back, and you can read about it here.

In the long run, I think humans don't have as much influence over the planet's climate as much as we would like to believe and there's been conflicting research as to whether co2 is really bad for the environment or not. If it is bad, then humans need to stop exhaling and elevating your breathing through bike riding will be banned. :P
