@Riki: When you're in the stalker pod, I'm assuming you're talking about the frog looking things. They're another Combine Synth they either just started to produce or have had no need to let out.

@Thunder: Eli lost his leg to a bull squid while entering a Combine city. They're around, but I'm assuming since they tend to like watery areas, they would hug the coastlines or stay near freshwater bodies. If they're salt water lovers the ant lions would have eaten/scared them away.

@77S: Poision make the headcrab carrier. Poision headcraps are fast and agile, and are harder to see in darker places. They can "kill and move on", and don't need to be a zombie to be more effective. They don't seem to send these guys out often, though as they're the rarest headcrab in the game.

^yeah that's what i was talking about.

im sure the reason they didn't use bull squids in the second one, is because if they use bulll squids, then they gotta use tentacles, and other HL1 creatures im sure

Well, they're not against that at all. The portal storms caused by the death of the final boss in HL1 brought a goodly amount of creatures from Xen to earth. I'm sure it's mostly an environment issue -- the "coast" you're looking at in HL2 is the Black Sea.

Fast and agile? Poison headcrabs are the slowest ones but take you down to 1hp in one hit. Fast headcrabs are the fast and agile ones.

What I don't understand is how the first ties into the second Half Life. In the First one, portals open to earth and Zen aliens start pouring in. Headcrabs were already in the first Half Life so did the Zen use headcrabs as well? Is that also were barnacles come from? I never played Half Life 1 but I know the *general* storyline. Anyway, after we killed the Zen leader, it set their slave races free, which included the Vortigaunts who now allied with Earth. But besides Votrigaunts, where did all the rest of the Zen go? I know the Antlions came from Zen, but what about the Houndeye, Bullsquid, Tentacle, Snark, etc. Where did they go?

I believe that the Combine took over Zen, enslaving the creatures that lived there and used the portals to attack earth.

i forgot that barnicles were in both HL1 and HL2, I think it's one of the coolest creature designs.

I agree, the barnicles are bloody lethal and such a great design, the way they kind of....fall out....once you shoot them, its fantastic.

Xen is a planet, actually. What happened was when we caused the resonance castcade, and the portals started to open around the facility, the first bunches of creatures where just random animals. After a while, a being called Nihilanth noticed these portals and saw this as an opportunity to strike. Nihilanth has slaves (Vortagaunts), but he himself is a slave to the Combine, sort of like Breen. Nihil figured if he could take Earth maybe he could strike at the Combine and be free. His idea failed.

As for where did the other creatures go, well it's been years since the portal storms ended (though in Episode 1 they're starting again), so creatures that warped into the area might not have survived.
