i do think that there has been a culture built up around guns in the US (no doubt by the gun makers)...this culture of freedom and human rights..the right to defend oneself etc..i think that where the change needs to come..right now guns are still "cool" to alot of americans.. as much a status symbol as a protection device...in japan/canada, even though its possible to license and own a gun..people really have no interest..
No interest of guns in Japan? So that's why thousands of Japanese come to America to shoot, the reason why airsoft was invented there, and why there are various Japanese gun magazines and even a 3-part show on Guns of the World.

I forgot to mention--Nagasaki's mayor was shot and killed a few months ago.

You see.... Jackoboy Im having a hard time taking you seriously after that Sweden and semi automatic weapon remark.
He confused Sweden wth Switzerland.

Oh my God! My dad's Walther is breaking out of the safe and coming to kill me! I can hear its footsteps on the stairway! Oh God someone help me!

Yup. Only techically mandatory anymore. Less than 20% of the agegroup do their military service so mandatory is a very vague term for it.

I certainly don't think the issue is simple enough for a fat man and a skinny silent guy to explain to me.
What the h ll does that mean ?
I;m sure everyone else got the joke but I'm clueless.
Maybe Jackoboy was thinking of Switzerland where I think most males are in the army and keep a weapon at home, at least I remember reading something to that effect in the early 80's.

Of course the gun culture has to go.
So does the child abuse culture and the racism culture and the religious bigotry culture but that simply won't happen.
I'm sorry but you just can't compare the culture of Japan to almost anywhere let alone the US, it just doesn't work. Comparing one of the most insular cultures in the world to the most open and diverse culture .... I mean come on.

Almost all guns start out legal. sure some of them make it here from the backyard gunsmith in Peshawar most of them are legitimately manufactured and stolen or sold illegally.
That is where gun control can be effective by ensuring that if you own a gun you are responsible for storing it in such a way that it cannot be easily stolen and be required to prove it.
But I don't think is going to happen.
I think the threat of the requonquista will grow exponentially and gun ownership will rise, even illegal guns owned by otherwise law abiding citizens.
Now I am also sure that Scarface will say I am fear mongering but I have read a few books on the fall of empires and I think we are headed that way and fast.
Iraq will be our Teutoburg Forest and there are already plenty of Vandals and Goths out there.
If I'm right then private gun ownership will be very very important.

In the eyes of the law it is "mandatory".... but in reality, if you dont want to do it, you dont have to.

And I checked up on Switzerland, their militia/homeguard have their assault rifles at home. So do our homeguard they have their Ak4s (G3) at home, but this is subject to change, du to a shooting last year when a homeguardsman shot a young girl in one of the suburbs of Stockholm.

What amazes me, is that people are ignorant enough to say "ZOMG! More concealed carry licenses? It's going to be the Wild West!"

Have those people ever gone to apply for a concealed carry license? No. For a concealed carry license, you have to jump through hoop after hoop and prove that you aren't some crazy moron, and you have to take extensive classes that teach you where/where not and when/when not you can use your weapon.
