Yes, obviously it's not gun control's fault for Victoria, Australia, having a 300% increse in violent crime after a gun ban, and it's obviously not laxed gun control that causes a drop in crime after a concealed carry law is passed.

I say it again if you could snap your fingers and make all the illegal guns go away I would be all for severe restrictions on gun ownership but since you can't do that you have to deal with the situation at hand.
If some really rich guy wanted to do something about it he or she could go on the black market and start buying up the illegal guns thereby driving up the price and reducing the availability.
But that would have the backlash of making them so valuable that they would be worth killing for.
The simple, short term answer is to make the penalties for carrying an illegal weapon so severe that most people simply wouldn't think of it and those that did carry would get locked up for 30-40 years until they were no longer a threat.

They are manufactured in a plant or in a cave (pakistan), shipped out by the crate to legal buyers such as stores, armies, ect. From there they get used, sold, stolen and then resold on the black market. There will always be the demand for the manufacture of arms, so they will always be created and sold. If they get stolen or lost in transit (stolen to be resold) thats just supply and demand. Many people, govts, groups are not allowed to buy from the source so they get them by other means. Man is the root of the problem, and until mankind changes there will always be guns, illegal or legal.

We are a young nation and for many years guns were essential for protection because there were wild animals and little or no law enforcement.
As the years went on the guns never went away.
We also have a tradition of hunting due to large areas that are still "wild".
Then came the 60's and the explosion of drugs which due to the profit margin required guns to protect the operations. It hasn't changed much since then and most of your gun violence is not random, it's not VT type shootings, it's one criminal shooting another criminal.
So it's not like they handed out guns and told people to go wild with them but guns are part of the tradition of many areas. Legal guns that is.
There are many measures that could work but between the ACLU and the NRA somebody is always using their influence to prevent meaningful change.
