Well AD&A, I think you answered your own question as to why some in Vermont might want to secede. We're progressive, and just trying to get in ahead of the rush. Like with slavery.

I don't think that's why they are calling for secession.
Vermont would have a tough time as an independent nation.
I remember when the Feds were blackmailing states with highway funds over the drinking age and VT told them to F-off and grandfathered anyone of age at the time of the change.
I had just moved to NY and really thought that was great but it is slightly more complex right now.
I don't have any data on this but I would guess the Vermonters who are self sufficient are not the same ones who are calling for secession.
