Off the top of my head, I'm pretty sure Eternal Silence, Empires and Dystopia will work off SDK base. Some other mods will work off HL2DM itself. A lot of mods should work. Some might not. If the HL2DM that you obtain this way is treated differently from one you can buy, you might not be able to download Source SDK base at all. | |

Valve's a bunch of "Indian givers" and ATI won't back me up in my scrap. I got HL2 free when I bought my Radeon 9800xt a couple years ago (I activated it through steam and played it). When I recently reformatted and reinstalled steam and tried to re-activate HL2 I got a message saying my HL2 key was invalid. Yea I emailed and complained a bunch but they insist that the offer has expired!!! How the hell can that offer expire? I thought all steam products were located at Steam's account servers? I bought that card over a comparable Nvidia card solely because of the free HL2 offer, in fact a Nvidia card came with my machine and I payed extra for the Radeon!! I hate to punk out and re-buy HL2 just for insurgency mod but boycotting Valve would hurt me more then them...sigh.
*Thanks for letting me vent guys* |

Jonnypissof, I had the same problem as well. my serial had been stolen, used before I used the scratchcard and no one would do anything about it.

I got my 9800XT shortly before HL2 was released and it came with the full suite of HL games including all the originals and lost coast and all that.

Yep that's what I did. I used my original steam account with the already activated HL2 key (I played HL2). After reformat, Valve did indeed recognize my steam account, although they have invalidated my HL2 key. This is why I'd be leary of buying an ATI card based on a free HL game, as they can cancel the key whenever they feel fit. (so I payed extra for the ATI card and now I have to buy HL2 again? I would have come out ahead if I would have bought the Nvidia card and HL2 retail)
Seems to me the convenience of having steam opposed using a disk is being able to play your games on any PC or operating system as long as you can log onto steam. So my reformat shouldn't have invalidated the key. |
