Saving Private Ryan

Now, I know that most of you young whippersnappers will have been too young to see SPR when it was first released, so here is a clip from the first few minutes of the film. It shows the landing of US forces at Omaha Beach, and is probably the single best battle sequence ever laid down on celluloid. Unfortunately, the clip doesn't do justice to the sound effects from the film, so if you ever see advertised in your local cinema, go and see it.

Bear in mind that, despite the 3000 casualties (i.e four years in Iraq) taken by the allies on that day, this was a victory.

It is a truely awesome piece of film making. There aren't many films to get close to that.

I may just have to stick the DVD on my surround sound when I get home!!!!!

I do not suffer fools lightly!!!

The difference between the war in iraq and the invasjon of normandee was that you were fighting an occupant, ergo, the local populations were frendly towards you, and you did not have to face upp to the risk of anyone beeing a so called "Freedom Fighter"
Besides , that movie does indeed rock!

My point was that when people say how terrible casualties are in Iraq, they are talking bollocks. By any historical standard, casualties in Iraq have been very light.

Mhh... the opening scene is good, the rest of the film is not that realistic.

Yes indeed that was one fine opening sequence. BTW have you guys ever player "Medal of Honor, Allied Assault" PC version? that beach landing level was very true to the Saving Private Ryan movie, and hard as a "beach" to get through. Funny how they dumbed down the consol version because players cried about how hard (realistic?) the PC version was.

The first time I saw that beach scene I was just like "Holy Sh!T!!!!!" It was so intense and scary. I love that movie, I know parts may not be %100 accurate but the overall feel is amazing. And yes the COD beach landing was really well done for a game.

Cheers,

Close your eyes and imagine some really cool military picture, or better yet a really funny picture in this space. I said close your eyes damnit!

I've never tried the console version, but with the PC it's pretty hardcore. The only times you can move from defilade to defilade forward is when they stop firing to let the barrels cool down.

God, I wish they'd do that bit with a newer graphics engine. Even though, it was awesome. The only thing missing was the noncom throwing down his chewing gum when the sniper clears the machine gun nests.

I'd recommend any of those games for anyone looking to get more personally familiar with the war. It's a good way to at least recognize things, places, battles, mentality, etc. They've got their flaws, but it's good for someone who'd only read about it briefly (like me when I first tried it).

While alot of ppl belittle the rest of the movie, I will say on its behalf that it did almost make me feel guilty for playing some FH maps on 100% AI right afterwards.
