Oh. Well in Canada, the guards use bolt-action (possibly fake) rifles while on duty outside Rideau Hall, so I assumed it was similar in Britain, but I suppose Britain needs more security than that. Thanks for clearing it up.

I think brits use the Lee enfield for special drill purposes, while the US uses the M1 Grand. Bolt action rifles are used for that purpose becasue they dont have much protusions on them like the modern rifles do with their magzine and hand grips. Plus those old bolt actions were built during the time when the mlitary was more concerned with how they looked then with efficiency and thus such drill actually being made and practiced.
